Hello all,
Looking at a job out in the Colorado Springs area. I know virtually nothing about the area. Currently live in Dallas, Tx so I imagine the transition weather wise would be pretty significant. Can anyone tell me about the weather there? And also anything that might draw someone there? Obviously I expect some snow and cold temperatures but not sure about anything else.

I'm grateful for your help! Thanks!

I've spent almost a year there.

It's a great place. Just for proximity to activities.

There are lots of neat breweries too, for the public part of it.

Weather wise, it's cooler summers than Dallas, and cooler winters. But it's not too much snow. Very manageable.

I lived there for 9 years. The weather can get cold and it snows, but the sun shines a lot and it is a beautiful place to live. They have some decent restaurants and shopping. It is the second largest city in Colorado I believe,

Mountains are 30 minutes away.

Housing is probably similar to Dallas

Not all school districts are equal if you have kids. They have several bars downtown and it's decent.

Without knowing anything about you and your situation difficult to keep giving you info. I loved living there, but transfer forced my hand and my job won.

Ask questions and I can answer if you would like.

I have not lived specifically in Colorado Springs, but have lived a while in Colorado...

I really liked the weather...hot in the summer, with spells of cold during the winter. You would typically have 4 or so good snows, but the sun shines most every day, so it melts quickly. I found the dry air to be particularly plesant.

one word of advice is to check out the cost of living very well in comparison to where you currently live...it really caught me off gaurd and I was'nt making nearly enough there to really enjoy the place...

I've come to really enjoy texas. the heat really sucks but it's better than snow if you ask me. I'm not a huge fan of the blizzards that will roll in the southwest a every now and then. Is Colorado Springs predominately freezing and uncomfortable? The wind can get so frigid here causing 30* to feel more like 15*. Is it a drier kind of cold in Colorado? I guess just talk to me about the weather. Can I still rock jeans and a t shirt occasionally and feel comfortable?

I'm also curious about the people up there. Texas has some southern charm to it and the people are generally friendly in eastern dallas where I'm at. I picture Colorado Springs as a bunch of people wearing north face jackets that are pretentious and 'cool'. Am I wrong?

Lastly, football is life down here. What is the big Colorado hobby? Is it the outdoors? Hiking? Skiing? Etc. I'll be working with lots of teenagers and students up there. Just wondering what the 'it' thing is.

ETA: moving as a family of 4. Wife and two young kiddos.

no. Even during winter/early spring it's cold a lot but like 40s cold. There's a lot of sun still during that time.

It is definitely a drier cold. It's dry as shite so in that way it's nothing like Dallas.

The weather is really unpredictable mostly. It changes a few times everyday it seems like.

People there are generally very outdoorsy because Colorado has so much to offer in that regard. They frickin love the Broncos but life doesn't revolve around football (mainly because people actually have better things to do with their time)

It's really just a nice city. It's laid out well, it's prettier than hell and it's perfect for a family.

My parents moved us there when before I was a teenager and I lived there til I graduated. As a place to grow up, you could certainly do worse.

Just moved to Colorado Springs in April. Relocated my family there. We love it. It's beautiful and there is so much to do. The weather is pretty awesome. It's been raining a lot more than usual, but it's helped keep the drought away this year. It's usually in the 50s-60s at night and 70-80s during the day with afternoon to late evening showers right now. It was snowing when we got up there in April, but it wasnt unbearable. I was wearing a thin sweater and shorts. The dry air makes a big difference. Make the move...you will love it.

Ditto. I live in North Colorado near Fort Collins. The air is super dry. 85 and sunny is very comfortable. It's the same for winter. Folks from the NE US rave about how the winters here are not as bad due to the low humidity.

Weather is bi-polar. It can be 16 degrees below zero one minute, hail like a mother fricker the next, wind like a hurricane, tumbleweed storms, but the default is always sunny, clear, beautiful. We love it.

Oddly, I found the people MORE friendly than those in the south. I was surprised at how nice and genuinely happy folks are here.

It's a little rowdy, a little frontier, a little conservative and progressive. More liquor store per capita, I believe. Worth a try.

You're moving up 6 degrees in latitude it's not the Arctic circle.

Pretty much every single thing about Colorado is better.

Yes you're wrong.

Hiking, snow skiing, water skiing, rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, parasailing, sky diving, surfing (yes surfing), fishing, camping, rock crawling, off roading, elk hunting, bear hunting, deer hunting, wine tasting, whiskey tasting, micro breweries, pro football/baseball/hockey/basketball/soccer, Red Rocks amphitheater, natural hot springs etc, etc. There's more but I think you get the idea. If you can't enjoy living in Colorado then you just suck at life.

If the options were Colorado Springs or Dallas, I'd choose Colorado Springs all day and everyday. I lived in Denver for a while and used to go down to C.S. The weather is great. There's always something to do in town. Or you can drive an hour and be in the middle of nowhere Rocky Mountains.

Yeah the people are definitely very cool. Everyone is very nice and hospitable. Everyone just seems to love being there. It's so beautiful it's hard to not be in a good mood. I love west on highway 24 in woodland park which is about 15 minutes from the Springs but we're building a house in the Springs. There's a lot of stuff to do. You could do something every weekend and not do or go to the same place twice. If you have kids, the Cheyenne Mountain zoo is top notch. It's open 365 days a year and the membership is cheap. I found it to be nicer than Audubon zoo. There's also some very awesome hiking very close to the zoo in Cheyenne mountain. Helen Hunt Falls is bad arse. Garden of the Gods is awesome, Manitou Springs is also a really cool little town. Pikes Peak highway is a killer drive. You won't regret moving up there if you make the choice. We love it.

Colorado Springs is headquarters for Focus on the Family and several other fundy organizations, so there's a very strong religious conservative element. IIRC, weed is not legal in Colorado Springs. If I had a choice, there are other places in CO I'd rather live, but at least you're close to lots of outdoor stuff. If you're spending much time in town, you're doing it wrong anyway.

CO springs is really pretty but has a lot of military and religious fundamentalists.

This really irritates some people, but a lot of people love it.

Not much of a restaurant scene, not much of a go out scene. But its quite pretty, and a great place to raise a family. Schools are good, housing is a bit pricey but nothing like denver.

Well I love Texas as well, but the cold weather in Colorado is not full of humidity so you can get warm a lot of the day's wearing a fleece. This isn't some ski mountain town type of winters. Like I said the sun shines so many times after a snow fall and melt it soon after. You will have your seasons and there will be cold days, but you are living at 6000 ft above sea level there.

The people are generally good, but you will get all kinds of different people because it has such a huge military presence. They won't probably be Eastern Texas nice, but most are good people.

Colorado football will never match Texas football, but there is some decent ball played. Air Force Academy is close for a game or two. Broncos reign supreme for most and it is big there. There is a lot to do with the different seasons. Hiking, biking, camping, hunting, snow sports, water sports are the biggest hobbies. Some very nice golf courses available too.

Denver is an hour away full of opportunity, shopping, activities, etc.

This is ridiculous and the religious focus on the family didn't effect my stay in CS one time. You would think its this small town of nuts. It's a large city with many types of people....
