Why would they need to spend anything on substance abuse? Pot, we are told, is not addictive and not a gateway drug. We are assured by the pro pot crowd it is harmless...

weird

So technically you could buy pot from a drug dealer, not pay tax but it still be legal? I mean if someone asks about it just put it in a container from one of the stores. Won't people start doing that?

It's like all the stoners who have been selling pot legalization on making stuff like rope, clothing, oil and a million other things with hemp. Waiting for all the hemp manufacturers to open up any day now. Oh... wait that was just stoners blowing smoke up everyones' asses. Carry on.

this will happen, especially once it begins to become legal in more states

their is a huge black market for cigarettes between states with lower taxes

Wow, that's damn impressive. The Federal Government might have to let this happen to help clean up our economic mess. Imagine 50 states worth of this sort of tax revenue.

I'm more inclined to blow down some lines after drinking than I am after smoking though

It won't go to clean up shite. The govt. will just use it to pump into more pork laden programs.

Got to love the old pot is a gateway drug argument when alcohol is the first drug almost everyone uses. Alcohol is the true gateway drug.

Not really. Selling without a license is a criminal offense, and I think they may have even upped the penalties for this. Buying it is probably not illegal, but IDK.

I think most people would rather just go buy from a shop where they know that the weed is good, is not laced, and is legally contributing taxes. Do you buy booze from bootleggers?

I would like to hear some figures on how much less they're spending trying to catch these RUTHLESS pot dealers and maybe catching some real criminals. I imagine if you combine the tax revenue with the savings of cops elsewhere (hoping its not out giving stupid traffic tickets) then you've got a system helping everyone.

I don't like looking at the tax revenues in a vacuum. I'd like to see what the alcohol tax revenues did over the same time span to see if they went up, down, or stayed flat.

Less of an issue in CO, but other states would save money on the law enforcement aspect of it. I agree that this new income does not exist in a vacuum.

well i dont believe the very first "drug" you use is the only thing that can be considered a gateway drug.
