Maybe it's an acquired taste

It is, I used to not like it but more recently I'm like the OP. It has to be cold though, if your experience with coconut water is some guy with a machete giving you water fresh off the tree in 90 degree heat, it's not good.

It's completely different if you get it from a fresh coconut. The packaged stuff in stores is nasty.

I hate coconut and don't like the taste of coconut water.

That being said coconut water is awesome. It's the best thing I've found for a hangover. Pedialite is close.

those are not bad.

My first experience was the Vitacoco and I agree that one is gross. Recently started drinking the Naked Organic from Rouses Produce department, and it's totally different. So much better. Not sure heat they do different, but if you haven't tried it, I would recommend you give it a shot.

It's like my pop said. He never saw people drinking water until they started selling it in the bottles.

I can tell you more than I care to know about coconut water.

A few things:
1) it has to be very cold or it tastes terrible. I have no problem with warm beverages typically but coconut water is a different case altogether.

2) There are two distinct tastes of coconut water depending on whether it is pasteurized or HPP (high pressure processed). HPP will cost much more but taste way better. The leading brand for heat pasteurized is Vitacoco. There are only small brands right now that do HPP versions. Trader Joe's has a quality HPP private label. Harmless Harvest is a great branded option.

Sugar is not added to these products unless you are buying a fruit drink that is only part coconut water. Some consumers have backlash to the taste so companies have launched product offerings like Sobe's posted earlier in this thread. Those typically have added sugar.

The next big craze will be Maple water. It is gaining traction slowly and tastes alright. I prefer coconut water personally.

You will also see coconut water beginning to be branded as a sports drink alternative. There is a big market and coconut water is a terrific natural competitior to Gatorade. New brands will emerge using coconut water as the base and then enhancing it even more to make a superior sports drink.

Body Armor is a perfect example of a brand integrating coconut water. It has great financial backing and a professional athletes they sponsor.

For anyone that doesn't like the shelf stable coconut water, give a HPP coconut water a try. It costs about $5 for a 12oz. bottle but is a noticeably superior product. Sometimes it has a pink tint due which is naturally occurring.

In terms of thirst quenching nothing beats water but in terms of energizing your body with nutrients it needs as well as replace lost fluids... There are much better options than water.

I don't know what you had. I got some from Whole Foods once and tried to like it. It was gross.
