I'm trying to show the OP how to turn this back around on HR should he be called in for his innocent ribbing of a coworker. The truth of the matter is that, in general, blacks don't want to be treated like everyone else. They want everyone to treat them like an emotionally fragile child.

I wouldn't include all blacks in this statement. I hired a black guy to work in my warehouse and he is the funniest, most racist SOB I've ever had the pleasure to be around. He'd make a clansmen blush when talking about the BLM people. He's a fantastic worker too.

While what you did is not racist and should in no way warrant an HR intetaction, as a 49 year old supervisor you should not be interacting with your subordinates in such a childish manner.

This is absolutely true and has been for a few years. Fear of being labelled racist shuts down many arguments before they start. A white boss better have their shite lined up to fire a black employee. Just for purpose of arse covering. So much so that some throw their hands up (figuratively because to literally throw them up is racist) and give up and do nothing.
Unless said employee did something egregious. Fighting, stealing, told you to "frick off" in front a room full of people, or took their genitals out.
