I saw a documentary on this. Why?

Marines on ground were not pleased. Can't they get in and help more quickly? And more important, can't they GTFO. Even faster than an RPG can be set up and fired?

Total civilian here talking out of my arse. So go easy on me if I am dead wrong.

It appears they saw it coming just a couple seconds before impact.

Short answer: the fighter pilot mafia has never been enthusiastic about CAS because they see it as a supporting role.

F-22/F-35 taking up a shite ton of money/resources for planes that aren't even being fielded at a constant enough level.

Have to take from somewhere, the justification was that other platforms could maintain the role of the A-10, so while we lose that platform, we save money, and lose no capability.

Whether the part about the capability is true or not? Not for me to answer

I started getting really concerned about our true state of national security when they suggested replacing the A-10 with the F-35.

Scary thinking.

No doubt, replacing this beast for hell with a boondoggle program that needs to reboot every time it flies is politics at its finest.

It's a total package for the most part, but it only does around 20% of the CAS missions, so yes, it can be replaced.

Coming from a ground troop...I would take the A-10 all day everyday for CAS. The only other intimate capability for CAS is Helicopters which do OK, but cannot compare to the A-10. You cannot effectively maintain CAS from 10 or more miles out like the AF wants to replace the A-10 with. The A-10 is skimming the top of your head when they come in. If the AF scraps the A-10 then I pray that the USMC or Army takes it over. There is nothing that sounds better in a firefight than the sound of an A-10 coming in with guns-a-blazing. From my experience, the enemy's will to fight is instantly drained from them when an A-10 comes in.
The AF may not lose any capability, but the guys on the ground sure do.

The MGRS grid from the video puts it in the Tagab Valley. I've had several engagements in that same place. The liveleak logo is obscuring the date but I think I can make out 2013. I was there at the same time.

I was in Boy Scouts when we got to watch the Warthog on some practice strafing runs...When it was over, the pilot (who was our local veterinarian)
asked what we thought of his "gun with wings"

One kid said the sound of the 30mm gat was "like God farting"
