I can't stand going to the West Bank so that leaves me with one crappy City Park course and a pitch and putt Audubon Golf course and that's it. The options are already VERY limited and you think that's too much?!? Do you think these hipsters are paying City Park to use that space? They have a dog park that these people can use plus more land than they know what to do with. You should see how many course options other major cities have.

The PGA is not going to move the tournament away from a course that they own.

The footprint of the City park golf experience is being reduced tremendously. The new course will not be an average muni and gives the City a signature golfing experience that could draw additional tourist days and revenue..

Yeah, well TPC built a course in Avondale, and miraculously the tourney was moved there from English Turn with the quickness.
Unless TPC owns the city park course, why would they abandon their own course in Avondale?
Look, I'm on board with the course, and wish the tourney was in City Park as well. I just don't agree with the justifaction the same way.
I justify it selfishly, simply by saying I want to play a nice golf course in NOLA.

The PGA is moving the tournament to the City Park location this was a done deal in 2005. The first tournament will be held there in 2020 but don't think this has been publicly announced yet. The opposition is being secretly funded by political & business (adjacent landowner) interests on the Westbank to try and stop the project from going forward.
The PGA also doesn't own the course on the Westbank. The State of Louisiana owns that money pit and we subsidize that course every year with tax payer money to keep it afloat.

His nickname is "The Open Doctor". He's often brought in to adjust a golf course so they can attempt to make a bid on the US Open.
Getting a US Open would be Holy Grail of this course.

English Turn was already there, then they used taxpayer funds to build TPC and tear up wetlands in the process -- dangling the idea that building it would bring major tournament here. Isn't TPC a net money loser and requires continuing subsidies?
City Park CEO is correct, though: This plan has been in the works for years. The grungy faces on the video tell me that many of the protesters are Johnny-come-latelys to the city who didn't know what was there before.
I understand the need for revenue to run the park, but that being said, CEO Bob Becker is a Ron Forman-wannabe in the making (and the massive salary that goes along with it). He has done some good things, but he's also paved over and made huge chunks of the park "pay to play" -- or even to enter. A kid cant even kick a ball on a soccer field without being molested by a City Park cop and shooed away. Becker is the A-hole who wanted to build a film studio in the park.
Why not build a water park there, if you're going to keep paving over everything? Or something more of the mass public would gladly pay to use?

It was moved to Avondale to spur development of the Churchill Farms property that the owner couldn't sell for the last fifty years. TPC is not the owner of the TPC of Louisiana--the name is licensed to the state by the PGA.

I just still don't buy the whole idea that this is going to be a big money making operation and will be hosting major tourneys.
I don't have a problem with putting a golf course back there in theory, but I hope the bean counters have thought this through.
I love everything else City Park has done since Katrina. Everytime they add something it has been a welcome addition.

They have a Change.org petition that has been circulating on my FB feed for a while now. I don't give a shite about golf, or urban nature sanctuaries.
Personally, I don't see what the big deal is about turning an old golf course into a better one. Especially when they've already turned the old south course into a "permanent festival ground."

I don't know everything about him but City Park is thriving. The new tennis facility is EXTREMELY NICE! It isn't cheap to play and its always packed. The dog park is also really nice and a lot of people use it. Something tells me these hipsters don't want to pay a dime to use any of the facilities. I can definitely see a new nice golf course performing the same way.

Since Katrina until the fences went up I have gone running where the new course is being built several times a week in the morning. I also drive by it several times a day. There are VERY few people who use that area of the park for walking, meditation, running or anything else. I rarely see anyone else there. I will miss the space too. But I value City Park as a whole more. CP needs the revenue from this golf course. It gets very little if anything from the state or city. Before Katrina the golf courses made up a huge chunk of its operating budget, even without big tournaments. I bet none of these protesters have ever donated a nickle to CP. They need to get over it. Plus, they can still use the area between Pan Am Stadium and Harrison as a walking path. It's quite nice.

20 minutes north of new Orleans puts you at mile marker 20 of the Causeway. Very little green space there, liar
