I deposited a large check this morning and suddenly there's a personal banker, his boss and someone else at my side to offer their "services." This before I even left the teller counter.

Is this s.o.p. at the average bank?

How big of a check?

They may have been deciding if they were going to put a hold on the deposit or not, depending on a few different factors. (How much is in your acct, how much the check was for, what bank the check was drawn on, etc.)

ETA: just reread it, no telling.

Did you politely decline their services and rush out to your car to post this?

Apparently it's your first large check.

Nowadays, yes. At least at the one I work with.

The idea is "relationship integration". The retail folks (tellers, personal bankers) are supposed to be able to recognize "sales" opportunities and communicate them to wealth mgmt, commercial/small business lending, insurance, etc.

Upper six figures. Not terribly large, but more than a week's pay. You'd have thought the check emitted some sort of magic scent the way these people glommed on to me.

You don't count the numbers after the decimal.

It is. I generally deal in cash transactions, which are handled in a different manner.

upper six figures is $900k.

If i was a bank manager and you walked in to deposit $900k in a retail bank, I would realize I had a sucker and buddy up to you real fast.

Thanks for the information. I typically avoid banks, at least ones in this country. However, should I ever deposit another check of any size into a U.S. bank, I'll bring with me a baseball bat or some mace or something to fend off the "relationship bankers."
