2 years ago I would have said salt. However my brother claims the pump constantly malfunctions and it has been nothing but a pain in the arse. He's switching back to chlorine. The natural pools sound cool but that looks like a mosquito shite show waiting to happen.

My parents just had to replace the big filter thing. Took over 20 years. Been pretty good.

Chlorine or salt water pool

They are both providing chlorine.

Salt: NaCl

A salt is just an ionic compound made of cations and anions.

Supposedly their outdoor ceiling fans/furniture were rusting from the salt water splashing. IDK. Husband will have to learn to tend to that.

That's some bullshite IMO. We've had ours for 6 and noticed no issues.

About to put a pool in.

If you have exercise equipment, expect to use the pool about as much on the second year and decreasing thereafter

i have salt. I have not had problems, but I did have to change out my salt cell(which took about 5 minutes). I was under the impression those cells lasted longer than it did.

3 years max is about the norm that I see. 5 years or more is a unicorn.

You can prolong its life a bit by doing an acid bath/flush on the cell every 3-4 months and when you first open it if you close the pool for the winter.

So with salt, you just stop putting chlorine and sprinkle a few of those big round salt containers in? Cool. I'll have to try it.

I've had saltwater for 11+ years and I'm on my second cell. But the control unit is dead now and the replacement is obsolete. I would have to spend about 2K to replace the unit and re-plumb the intake and outlet.

We bought a bucket of the large 1 per 10k gallons of water chlorine tablets and just drop one in the skimmer basket when needed.

The filter and pump are still going strong after 11+ years and Katrina and Gustav.

Overall low maintenance in my opinion.

Smack, just what we were told ... and see a post toward the bottom of page 2. Some other poster said pretty much the same thing. I have no first hand experience with it .. yet.

You'll have a chlorine pool either way. 4 ways to get a chlorine residual in your water: Bleach, chlorine tablets, Chlorine gas (pretty much illegal now for residential use), and salt with the help of a salt water generator.

Salt has a very high PH value and will cause you to go through a lot more muriatic acid. You will have the added maintenance of acid washing your cell every 3-4 months. Cell will go out every so many years and if you're not a do it yourself kind of guy it will cost you a pretty penny to get someone to install.

You ever watch those old Jay Leno skits where they served people cheap wine and told them it was really expensive, and these same people went on and on about how great it was? I think people who drop the initial 1200-1400 on the salt water system and initial salt load like to convince themselves how great it is to confirm the investment was good. The softness everyone talks about has more to do with the higher PH and you can have a higher PH in a regular chlorine pool if you use a lot of sodium bicarbonate.

Was salt, ate up all pool furniture, one year your foot goes right through the lounges and paint starts coming off. Cell went out and they wanted $2000...all chlorine now but either way is OK

I use bleach, borax, and baking soda. I was tired of the in line chlorinator not working. While I was researching salt water pools, I read many complaints about rusting of metal destroying decorative rock around the pool. In my opinion you have these problems with the salt water pool b/c the salt cell is producing Cl gas which isn't getting completely dissolved in the water. The trace amounts escape and eventually rusts the nearby metal. With Cl tablets the tablets are dissolved so there isn't any trace amounts of Cl gas to cause rust. Again this isn't substantiated but has become my opinion after asking many "pool professionals" why one would cause rust and not the other when the are both producing Cl- ions.

You may want to consider an ozone system. A friend of mine has one on his pool and he loves it. With ozone you will still have to use Cl tablets for residual Cl levels; however, you will cut down on the amount Cl tablets needed. Ozone kills organics in water with immediate contact but doesn't have a residual life which is why you will still need Cl.

The biggest problem with using tablets is that they cause your CYA levels to increase. The higher the CYA the more Cl your pool will require to be sanitary.

I highly recommend going to a pool forum and read some of the posts there.. One of my favorites is trouble free pools.

yep the stabilized tabs will increase your cyanuric acid level over time, if it gets too high the best way to drop it down is a partial drain of the pool. This gets tricky in drought areas when there are water usage restrictions.

Had the vision system in my pool that was built 14 years ago. This was fine but the metals in the vision system stain the plaster a bit but it worked well for about 6 years.

Wanted to automate my hot tub and traded some dentistry to a pool guy and he insisted on the salt water system. The water felt great but I had two problems. We went through a really wet couple of years and all that rain diluted the salt concentration. I was forever going to home depot to fetch bags of salt. Those things are heavy and a pain to carry to dump in the pool. I also was constantly adding muriatic acid to lower the pH.

The second issue was that my pumps kept going out. It got expensive replacing them. I finally changed my pool to regular chlorine and had much more luck with my equipment and really didn't notice much of a difference in the feel of the water.

I'm building soon and will not put in a salt water system.

That's all I got.

I may be back in a year cussing it. I know numerous people that switched from chlorine to salt and all have been happy. I'm sure, as with anything, you'll hear good and bad from both. We've had both and the salt is less to maintain. Haven't really noticed issues with furniture or equipment, but with the sun and humidity here in South Arkansas, everything looks like shite after a few years anyway. May have to run some ongoing experiments comparing shite next to pool to shite away from pool. Will bump in two years and let y'all know.
