Chinese to Build Worlds Largest Supercollider

China's Big Bang!
So, if CERN in Switzerland scares the shite out of Hawking, this one being twice as large should really shake him up.
Am I the only one that thinks these things aren't a great idea?

According to local media reports, scientists at Beijing’s Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) have designed a giant underground ring with a circumference of more than 50 kilometers, (CERN’s Large Hadron Collider measures 27 kilometers in circumference).

There is definitely a lot of unknown with those things

I wonder where they stole the blueprints from?

Only if you are worried about the earth turning into a black hole.

First they get a DisneyLand
Now this.
What's next?
Now this.
What's next?

That thing is going to be so janky. Like cheap plastic knobs all over the place and stuff

When you read about the CERN supercollider, there are some amazingly terrifying facts surrounding it. That's why I was interested in seeing that one twice its size is being planned.
For example:
For example:
quote:
The CERN collider is composed of some 9,600 super magnets – which are 100,000 times more powerful than the gravitational pull of Earth - that fire protons around a circular track at mindboggling speeds. A beam might rotate for up to 10 hours, travelling a distance of more than 10 billion kilometers, enough to make it to the far reaches of our Solar System and back again. Travelling just below light-speed, a proton in the LHC will make 11,245 circuits every second.
quote:
There may be another reason for the CERN super collider being buried hundreds of feet underground: The unbelievable hot temperatures it can reach. How hot you ask? Well, about as hot as conditions in the Universe after the Big Bang, or more than 100,000-times the temperature at the center of the Sun. This will be achieved, CERN says, by accelerating and colliding together two beams of heavy ions
quote:WTF???
One year after CERN’s grand opening, Sergio Bertolucci, former Director for Research and Scientific Computing of the facility, grabbed headlines when he told a British tabloid the super collider could open otherworldly doors to another dimension for "a very tiny lapse of time,” mere fractions of a second. However, that may be just enough time “to peer into this open door, either by getting something out of it or sending something into it.”
quote:
Essentially what the CERN experiment hopes to achieve is to separate – by way of the atom smasher - the invisible dark matter, which has been described as the very glue that holds together, from the visible. There’s just one problem with this experiment: Nobody has any idea what the consequences will be if that goal is achieved. So once again, this ‘dark versus visible’ paradigm has generated a battle that transcends the scientific world, becoming a question involving philosophy and spirituality.

I'm convinced the speculation that these things could make the universe cease to exist or whatever is just ultra-nerds jacking themselves off.
And if they happen to be right I guess we'd never even know, as everything would indeed cease to exist.

What could possibly go wrong?

I wonder if they use tools from Harbor Freight to build it.

I think CERN is one of the few examples in science where we may have dove in head first without really knowing the possibilities, and then the possibilities are actually enormous. Big things are happening there, and this Chinese one will only increase the occurrences

Well if they build it like they build other shite, I would be very worried.

I am going to confess that I do not have any idea what a supercollider is.

I read that North Korea already built a bigger one.
