Seems there has been a rash of confrontations recently between school authorities and students over use of cell phones at school. I think this has the potential to blow up into major problem. Whats everyones opinion?

You can't close it now.

They should not be allowed in the classroom.

Should be turned off in the backpack or a pocket from first bell until the last bell.

Take it out, lose it until parent/guardian can come pick it up.

Simple, they stay in your locker. There is no reason you need them in class.

my 14 yo niece had hers confiscated for 2 weeks for repeated violations. It was incredible motivation for her to follow the rules.

Many schools have been duped into using educational technology that requires cell phones/iPads/etc. They're not going away.

Those responses are fine, but being a retired public school teacher, I can tell you that if you attempt to confiscate one then all hell breaks loose.

One example doesn't solidify your spinoff here. It's 2015, phones aren't a new phenomenon, millions of kids have them and it won't take millions of a-hole cops to enforce school policy on the whole.

In this day and age, especially if you have older kids who drive back and forth from school, it's unrealistic to expect them to not have them at all in school IMO.

That said, it's not unreasonable to expect a kid to keep it in his/her pocket/purse with the ringer on silent during instruction. Or for a teacher to ask them to put it away when they're on it when they're not supposed to be. A lot of district/state personnel who come in to audit a school when their scores are low will mark a teacher if a student is sitting there on the phone and you don't address it.

At my old school the policy generally was take it away until the end of the period on first offense, end of the day on 2nd, a week on the 3rd, and 30 days on the 4th (sometimes the parent would contact the board and we'd have to release it to them though).

That may work well in a private school where parents support school adminstrators. In most public schools its a totally different animal.

Well I assume that problem lies in the teachers' ability to discipline, regardless of the violation.

Lsuboo, you have no clue as to the kind of problems teachers deal with everyday in public schools. Why fo you think I retired?

I didn't mean ability as in personal ability... but more that I'm sure teachers are handcuffed as to what they can do to discipline a student.

during school hours, they shouldn't be able to use them. however, after school hours, they should be able to have them for safety purposes.

Cell phone use should be banned from school. Emergency? Use the office phone.
