Cell Phones started to become mainstream when I was in high school. No smart phones, but Nokias and Razrs.

I had a teacher who had a box duct taped to the window outside. If he caught someone with their phone he would confiscate it and put it in the box. The box was outside of the classroom so if it rained or anything it would have gotten wet.

He would keep the phones in the boxes all day until school was over. Had to go by after school to get it, so you were SOL if you played a sport. In that case you had to get it in the morning.

Never got a phone taken up but he did take my Game Boy Advance and put it in the box.

Wish more teachers did this. Confiscation and no, you don't get it after the class is over, but until school is over.

My parents would tell them to keep it permanently. They wouldn't go to bat for me if this were a problem to where my phone got taken up all the time. They would tell me tough shite and to get quarters for a pay phone.

In 6th grade when Pokémon was really popular I brought my Game Boy to school and it got taken up. I didn't see that shite again for 2 weeks as my parents taught me a tough lesson.

In many public schools there are many students roaming halls. That box method would not work due to theft.

Yeah that'd be a cluster.

I had a teacher I used to work with that bought one of those clear closet shoe holders and labeled it with desk numbers. If you sat at that number desk and had a cell phone you put it in it's respective pocket until the end of class or when they had free time. It worked remarkably well, even in a inner-city middle school.

We currently have a rule that if it is taken, you cannot receive it back until the next Wednesday. If it's taken Tuesday, your parent can pick it up that following day. If it's taken Thursday, you must wait a full week until a parent can come get it.

There is also a certain time period in which they can be picked up and the parent must pay $10 holding fee to pick up.

tldr Dutchtown was pretty lax about them and individual teachers made rules for classrooms.

I work in education kinda sorta, and a school recently had a teacher confiscate a phone, lose it, and then lie about losing it.

I agree with confiscating it until a parent comes and gets it.. I don't agree with the rule my school had which was to confiscate it and keep it for the remainder of the school year. They ended up having to bend to all the parents raising hell, rightfully so since they're stuck paying a monthly bill on the thing.

The amount of time teachers an school administration spend dealing with cell phone problems is also a major problem.

I used my cell phone all the time at school. Teachers never said anything.

A similar idea I've seen posted when there are extra outlets available is to provide chargers for the kids to use, then they're more willing to surrender their phones.

My daughter's school supposedly has an "off from morning bell 'til afternoon bell" policy or else it's confiscated, but some of the teachers have told them they could use certain apps for their schoolwork in class. Kind of contradictory IMO, but I guess the rule has been stated if they ever need to enforce it.

Also many instances of cell phone theft at school. Usually when this occurred the kid whose phone was lifted would go nuts disrupting the entire class.

In this day and age, especially if you have older kids who drive back and forth from school, it's unrealistic to expect them to not have them at all in school IMO.

No offense, but why would you say that? Many of us drove just fine back and forth to school without a cell phone.

Good luck explaining that to parents.

There are a lot of things from the past that people think were "just fine", but you know what? Times change. I agree that the phone should remain off and not be allowed in class, but people's resistance anything different than what "they had" is eye-rolling stupid. Many parents whose children drive to school prefer them to own a cell phone. Deal with it.

If we just sat around and never embraced anything new, we'd be quite a stupid bunch, don't you think? I'm sure there were plenty of things you had/did when you were younger than your parents and grandparent "did fine" without. That is a silly thing to say.

I teach in a public high school and confiscating phones can cause huge problems. Who knows what is on those phones and some kids will rather a huge problem with teachers, administrators, and LEOs than to hand the phone over.

In my experience having the kids who get caught using the phone during class either put it in their backpack or a box removes the distraction and the kids don't feel they are at risk for the teacher to go through the phone.

And yes I have teacher friends who have taken phones and then lost them.

I suspect the owner of the phone took the phone when the teacher was not looking then demanded their phone back.

Good point. You have no idea what kind of shite is on that kid's phone, and you're probably better off staying far away from it

In high school, I think cell phones should be banned from the classroom. They can be put in lockers, kept at home, etc. I know this is 2015, but there are certain aspects of life where lines need to be drawn. With that said, I think the whole education system needs to change, but as it is today cell phones in classrooms are nothing but a distraction.

I have no problems with banning cell phones at school. Youre worried about your kid driving without one? Simple. Leave it in the car. Your kid gets sick? Use the office phone. Its not that hard people geez.
