It's perfectly fine, according to:

ABC News
The FCC
Mythbusters
Petroleum Equipment Institute

quote:

We have not documented a single incident that was caused by a cellular telephone.

Cell phones continue to be cited as causing fires at the pump in e-mails circulating on the Internet. So far, we have been unable to document any incidents that were sparked by a cellular telephone. In fact, many researchers have tried to ignite fuel vapors with a cell phone and failed.

Technically most cell phones are not intrinsically safe and could possibly ignite vapors if the stars line up just right.

I use mine at the pump though. If that gets my car burnt up, well it was just that cars time to go.

Did they drop them?

The cell phone itself is unlikely to ignite it, but they are not intrinsically safe.

I didn't know people thought this was an issue. The people I can't stand are the idiots who smoke at the pump.

The woman who rather angrily told the guy at the next pump to stop talking before he got us all killed. She apparently equated it with him waving a butane torch around.

Saw a trashy little tramp light up and start smoking while pumping her gas recently. Guy next to her said something and she just laughed at him.

I wanted to go kick her in her count.

I knew this when Zack Morris was the only person in the world with a cell phone.

Unnecessary precaution.

Safety guys go apeshit over stuff like that (cellphones at gas pumps). Doesn't matter that it's impossible for it to happen.

I have been pumping gas with my engine running since I started driving in 1997. My dad always did and we never blew up so I thought the thought that it was dangerous was silly
