Cashier wouldn't let me buy a gift card at the grocery store with a credit card

I buy gas gift cards at the grocery store because I get 6% cash back with my credit card at grocery stores. I haven't had a problem for months. Today, the cashier randomly told me that I couldn't do it with a credit card and that nobody should have let me in the past. This seems like the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Instead of arguing with a manager, I just had her take it off and I'm going to go back tomorrow morning to buy it.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Your cashier was a dumbass. I've never not bought a gift card with a credit card at any retailer anywhere.

That transaction likely costs them 4% andthe margin on the card is smaller than the credit card transaction fee so they are losing money.

If told no tomorrow do you go back the next day? I would talk to manager before leaving and coming back

Easy trick for credit card thieves. More times than not, credit cards will be canceled at the first sign of fraud. Thief buys a gift card at a gas station and is able to use it.

Frick her if you had done it in the past I would have let her call the manager over.

Many retailers are no longer accepting credit for gift cards. The list grows by the day.

For a variety of reasons including fraud

They probably were frauded out of gift cards from a stolen credit card. This happened once when I was managing a restaurant. Someone called in and asked to buy a gift card for their relatives who were in town. Bought a $200 gift card and paid with a CC number. Couple came in that night and ordered $200 worth of food and alcohol. Two days later Visa reported to us that the card was stolen.

rite aid did this with vanilla cards as well. For months you were able to buy 500$ vanilla cards with your CC for a percentage cash back and deposit those in to your bank account to pay off the CC. Or use the money to pay off your mortgage. CC companies caught on to this and are cracking down on ways to cheat the system.

Perhaps you should exercise your critical thinking because it doesn't take much effort to realize there are legitimate reasons a retailer would disallow it.

This, several retailers have this policy. Best thing to do is to speak to the manager and explain 9/10 they override the policy if you spend $$$ there regularly (my experience anyways).

B/c it was busy, I'm in there a lot, and I usually go at 7:30AM when it is empty and the people are friendlier. I'd rather just talk to the manager then (if they don't let me buy it at that time).

Hell, one time when I bought one of these cards in the morning, a manager rung me up and let me do it.
