Why would you believe a cashier about this? You are the cashier aren't you.

If he wins, he'll probably spend it all on the next drawing.

$4,000 is 4,000 $1 bills above zero and too much (IMO) no matter what is the income denominator. Why? Because that leaves 292,196,000 chances against his $4,000.

I asked him as I was leaving out of curiosity. Don't see any reason for him to lie

Well that isn't true at all.

Yours odds improve from 1 in 292,000,000 to 1 in 146,000. That is pretty damn significant.

I'm not saying it is a good idea, but it is the equivalent of improving your odds from one in every American to one in every person in Metairie.

If he bought 2k tickets ($4k), that only brings the odds down to 1 in 291,998,000.

That is incorrect.

If you buy one ticket, your odds are approximately 1 in 292,000,000. If you buy two tickets your odds are now 2 in 292,000,000 or 1 in 146,000,000. If you buy two thousand tickets, your odds are now 1 in 146,000.

Think of it like a roulette wheel with no 0 or 00. If you choose one number, you've got a 1 in 36 chance of winning. If you pick two numbers you have a 2 in 36 chance or a 1 in 18 chance, not a 1 in 34 chance like your math would imply.

Now, that's the kind of stupid that's gonna thrive on the OT.

In fairness, he's highly likely to have many winning tickets so that will cut down on some of the losses.
