(4:45 p.m. EDT) -- Carnival Cruise Line has launched a program for 18- to 20-year-old young adults. Known as #LIV1820, it will be offered on all ships in the line's fleet.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald said on his Facebook page that a VIP area will be set up on each sailing, offering a chance for 18- to 20-year-olds to mingle over movies and music.

Each passenger in that age range will receive invitations to the VIP event in their staterooms.

Because that age group is too old for the kids clubs and too young to gamble or drink, it's often a demographic that's underserved by the cruise lines.

"There is no doubt that this age group is a challenge but we are now fully committed to making sure that that this age group has the best of times," Heald said in his post. Joking, he added, "There will be non-stop Justin Bieber music and lessons on how to drop it like it's hot."

This is going to flop so fricking hard. No 18-20 year old wants to go on a Cruise where they'll be continually ID'd. Maybe Campus Crusade, but that's all I can think of.

They will not be continuously ID'd. Everything is on your sail and sign card. They scan that card for everything and it shows whether you are old enough to drink, gamble, etc.

This is actually a good move, tons of people complain because their 18-20 year olds don't have anything to do.

Now, they CAN gamble. The gambling age is 18. But how many 18-20 year olds have extra money to throw away? It is just a few events they are throwing together for this age group to do, it isn't as if they are adding anything new to their ships.

that's the point of a cruise imo. To eat and drink and not worry where the hotel is.

As a frequent international traveler, I despise cruise ship vacations.

yea...

18-20 year olds still arent going to want to go on a shitty cruise line that they cant drink on when they could just go to a beach town and get sloshed w/their friends for far cheaper.

A majority of 18 year olds on a cruise are looking to have a cocktail or two. I think only the dweebs will show up while the cool kids are partying in someone's room.

Yeah, this seems more like something that will attract 14 year olds and not 19 year olds. "Where they can talk about movies and music"? How often do people in their late teens talk about that? Sure, early teens talk about that, but not really freshmen and sophomores in college. They're going to want to go to a beach, rent a condo, and get smashed for a few days over having to sneak booze in a shampoo bottle and praying it doesn't run out.

And you realize they aren't trying to get 18-20 year olds to book a cruise, right? They aren't even allowed to. This is aimed at the 18-20 year olds who are on trips with family or some kind of group. They don't allow anyone under 21 to book unless they are booking with someone 25 or older, I think. So this isn't some kind of marketing strategy to get these kids to purchase a cruise, it is literally just giving them more activities to do once on board.
