Career firefighters vs volunteer guys square off

HYATTSVILLE, Md. - Some volunteer firefighters are feuding with career firefighters in Prince George's County and there is so much animosity between them that they have gotten into altercations at the scene of emergency calls. The latest battle took place over the holiday weekend with a burning home as the backdrop and involved a volunteer firefighter from the Hyattsville station. It is the second altercation between a volunteer firefighter and career firefighter so far this year.
quote:
There are about 800 career firefighters in Prince George’s County and nearly double that number for volunteer firefighters, making it one of the largest departments in the country. We are told the rivalry between the two groups dates back more than four decades. Despite both groups responding to more than 150,000 calls peacefully, there are incidents like what happened on Sunday in Berwyn Heights. A career firefighter reportedly attacked a volunteer firefighter while they were both responding to a house fire. The department said it is too early to tell if this incident is due to tensions between the two groups.
quote:
Why is it happening? “It's the nature of the business,” Brady told us. “To be honest with you, I have been in this fire department for over 42 years and I cannot stand here today and explain to you why tensions continue between the two groups.” “I'd call it a battle of pride,” said Cunningham. “Right now with some things that are going, we feel like we are being left behind.” The volunteer firefighters blame unfair disciplinary actions, access to mandatory training and the volunteer department's top brass was removed from the chain of command. The career firefighters said it is a mystery to them on what is fueling this feud.

I always have found it funny that people in gangs always fight similar people.
You would think the bloods and crips would get along since they have similar likes, goals, background and values.
Same thing with the hells angles and outlaws or the slew of Mexican gangs.
But instead of getting along gangs want to kill those in the world most like themselves.
I am not surprised the career firefighters and volunteer firefighters have a feud.

I am not saying this about every volunteer firefighter, but I don't think I know one who doesn't suck. And what I mean by that is that they are incredibly serious about their job as a volunteer firefighter. There is nothing wrong with taking it serious, but I am talking about to the point.. They want to make sure everyone knows they are a volunteer firefighter and they love to tell you what people should have done in situations in which they are able to apply the shite they learn by being a volunteer firefighter.
My neighborhood is off of a highway. My neighborhood is the first of three adjacent neighborhoods and within that area there are a few VFFs. When a wreck happens, close enough where I can hear the sirens, etc.. It is automatic. I will here the sirens and then maybe 1 mins later here comes the VFFs flying down the road... but they are not just driving fast, it's like they are going so fast, they don't have full control of their trucks first.. Its two guys, both have a red light they have on their dashboard. And they love it when someone ask them what happened because they like to answer as if "they are in the know". If these VFFs in the story are like the ones I know, then this is not a surprise.

They value money and don't want to share it. The more the bloods make, the less the crips make.
1. Take out your competition
2. ?????
3. Profit

They are literally fighting for resources in the same niche like other organisms do in nature.

It's like any other club.. I'm sure some are more diehard then others. In my local rotary most people are pretty normal about it but some you can tell have nothing else to live for but rotary

I could see there being tension because some of the firefighters do it as their job. They get paid to do it.
Then they have some who only volunteer who probably overstep their bounds.
The ones who get paid probably feel like they are the "real" firefighters and the volunteers probably act like they're hot shite.
Or maybe the paid firefighters think they are hot shite because they think they are the "real" firefighters and the volunteers think they're douches.
In short, the professional firefighters probably feel they're superior, and the volunteers probably have an inferiority complex.
I can 100% see how there would be tension.

Classic "I'm a better hero than you are" pissing match.

Firefighters are a strange bunch. They seem to take more pride in their profession than anyone else.

That is the difference between professionals and wanna-be's. All a volunteer is someone who wants lights, sirens and an excuse to drive fast.
Of course, they will be one of the first on the scene because they drive recklessly but once the real firemen arrive they should stand down and let the professionals go to work.
I think they should do away with "volunteer" fire frauds all together!

quote:100 percent true. I've been around a lot of VFF and it's like they can't pat their selfs enough on the back how great they are. It's more of who has been on the most calls then actually helping people. If you don't think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread .... just ask one of them

I'm a career city firefighter. There are volunteers in the surrounding parish. We used to have issues with them but their new chief has kicked out the one's who were only in it for the lights and sirens. We only work with them on occasion (several wrecks at once) etc. some are good, but there are bad apples in the career side also.
As far as other comments about firefighters being way too proud or whatever. Sometimes true, that usually wears off after a few years.
ETA: the fact they fight on scene is an embarrassment to the entire profession.

Not every small town can afford paid firefighters though.

Tupac said it best.
I got love for my brother but we can never go nowhere unless we share with each other. Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers

No problem with pride in their job. Running into a burning building is no joke

I don't know why people upvoted this. 3/10

I upvoted it because it is so eloquently and passionately written.

I don't think you know how gangs work.
