Car title transfer

I recently bought a car from Texas. I transferred the title and got LA plates. The Inspection sticker from Texas doesn't expire for another 4 months. Do I need to get a LA brake tag anyway?

Not 100% sure but I would say probably so.. Its probably best just to go ahead and get it.

How long from the date of purchase do you have to do this?

Police drive along looking for certain colors on your Louisiana inspection sticker to determine if it has expired. It's not very likely that you will get a ticket with an out-of-state sticker unless you park on the street and and officer on foot looks at the sticker and waits for you to drive away.
I'd chance it, at least for as long as the sticker hasn't expired.

If you have LA plates, then you have to abide by LA vehicle rules and law.
Valid inspection sticker is a must

Unless you want to pay an extra 180 bucks for that inspection sticker, you'd best get it today. LA plates with no LA inspection is no bueno.

I went to a title transfer place about a week after buying the car. I don't know how long you can legally wait

yes and no. Yes by law you are supposed to. No you wont get into hot shite if you are pulled over with it. My mom has a car with florida plates and a New York state brake tag that hasn't seen either of those states in over a year. Never has issues.
I have a van with NOLA brake tag, I live in Kenner. Keeping the NOLA tag until it expires.
Now a tag is so cheap and easy to get it's kind of silly not to get one anyway. Unless you live in a place like Kenner where getting them can only be done at one place.
Not having front plates here it makes it hard for a cop to notice both your plate and your brake tag. He would have to remember one and then see the other. If a cop is doing all of this, he is just looking for a reason to pull you over anyway.
