I'm looking at getting a luggage carrier for the top of my car. I don't know much about these, but I'm looking for:
- Hard case
- Less than $200
- Big capacity
- Somewhat aerodynamic to not create much drag
- Can be locked

I've seen some old versions of Sears carriers on craigslist for decent prices, but I'm not sure if they are any good. Does anyone have good experience with these types of luggage carriers and can make a recommendation?

We got one of these:

LINK

Meets all your requirements, except price.

ETA: we have had it for 2 years and have used it on multiple trips. Sturdy, some wind noise, but not what you would expect. You can fit a lot of shite in it. Access (and locks) from either side of the vehicle.

What about the one that goes on the back in the hitch?

Any disadvantages to getting a soft carrier, besides creating a lot of drag...

doubt it had anything to do with the carrier.

I have a really old sears one I used to use. It last twenty years, but on the last trip a clip broke off and we had to use ratcheting straps to keep it on the roof rack. Now neither of our cars has a roof rack.
So we have a hitch rack now.

I'd rather that but I have an SUV and the trunk door swings out instead of up, so I don't see how that would work. I don't want to have to take the rack off if I need access to the trunk.

Very few hard shells are watertight, but people that I know that have soft carriers tend to have more water intrusion.

Other than that and drag, that's all I can think of.

That's pretty neat. I also fear of backing into something since I can't see the rack. I know roof racks are susceptible to low clearances, but I feel I'd be more likely to forget that rear rack is on and hit someone.
