Who would spend $250k on something that stays in a shop more than on a highway?

My Range Rover is now selling for $250k which is more than 2x what I paid for the exact same car in 2018. Only difference is a updated screen and software which is probably a couple hundred max more.

Sell it.

There is this amazing invention called a cell phone.

That's fine if the kid only drives it back in forth to the local high school.

When people stop thinking they need to buy a brand new vehicle for their kid. Get his arse a $5k beater

I picked up a 2004 Sport Edition 4Runner for my kid for $5k. Paint is rough, but mechanically it is very sound. His brother is driving a 2006 Ridgeline that we already owned for a couple of years. Owning an older car is a rite of passage for new drivers.

I brought this exact point to a family friend that owns a dealership, we may never see packed car lots again and I wouldn’t be surprised if manufacturers keep supply artificially low for this reason.

Manufacturers are letting dealerships die a slow death. The dealers are currently happy because they have no floor plan interest but are still selling ordered vehicles.

I remember when a "beater" was $500-$1,000

I drove a Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel that my dad bought for $500. At that time, diesel was about 10% lower than gasoline and I was getting over 40 mpg...which was nice, since my after school job was delivering pizzas.

Toyota’s sticker prices are baseline asinine.

IDK how available they are, but I plan on buying a new GR86 for my son for his 17th birthday…price doesn’t seem insane.

My parents bought me almost the same car, manual celica, back in the day and I drove that fricker all over this country during college. It is small, but I left for month long trips with everything I needed.

Here is a Maverick you can get for a lot less than the $30,000 price tag you are seeing.

I passed down my old '98 Chevrolet Cheyenne to both of my kids. Ended up getting 15 years out of that truck before I finally sold it.

The 4runner I mentioned in my post was one a guy bought for his son when he turned 16...he just graduated from college, and bought something newer. So, it was only about 9 years old when he bought it for his son.

Reading this scares the fire out of me. I paid like 38-39 for a new loaded 4runner right before the pandemic. Haven't checked to see what they are going for now.

You can disagree on the metrics I use to determine vehicle affordability. But do not pretend that it’s not realistic to spend under $40k for a vehicle.

Mean cost for a new vehicle is just under $50k. While I agree that doesn’t fit within a modest budget for an average family, it is the reality of the current market. Couple this with an inflated used car market, it’s often made more sense to buy new with the 0% interest new car financing options that were previously available.

Unfortunately both housing and vehicle costs are squeezing the middle class. Move further out to afford your home, and you need to have a more reliable car. Only a handful of cities have a viable public transit system that a typical 8-5 worker can efficiently utilize.

Our youngest is about to start driving. She's getting a 10 yr old Honda Accord. I might buy her something a little newer if she goes off for college. It won't be new though.
