I had to drop a car to make it reasonable for my kid. Insurance was going to be nearly $6,000/year for him alone. My insurance for my car and my wife's car totaled around $4,000/year already. I rarely leave the house on weekdays except for doctor's appointments. Made no sense to have 3 cars. Ditched my wife's SUV and my Vette, bought a nice family car, and bought my kid's Mustang. His insurance dropped from $6K to $1,500 with 3 drivers on 2 cars. Total insurance is now $5,500/yr. instead of over $10,000.

Just go get a couple of quotes from other companies and compare them.

yea its expensive, and it doesn't change for a while. I'm 24, no tickets, no wrecks, and my insurance is about 260 a month. Can't wait to turn 25 next year

It's free to get quotes from other places

Yes it is but what the OP discovered from USAA is the exact same thing I discovered from State Farm

I hope so. Once my kid heads off to LSU I'll need a 3rd car again.

Just saying vicarious liability is over. I am guessing rates are still very high.

Go get insurance just for him with progressive.

won't be cheaper and you'll have minimum limits and you'll still be liable for his liability with such shitty limits.

Agree, I tried to put my daughter on her own policy and was getting back quotes in the 4-5K range for her alone and that was with lower limits. Couple of guys in the business told me that Insurance for new drivers (kids) has gone through the roof.

Get a broker...let them do the research for you and get your options. Way better than calling them all yourself and they can get better rates anyway.
I used to have USAA, got with broker & switched to progressive cut my bill in half for better liability coverage.

So basically, I guess I shouldn't feel that bad. About $2800/yr is the cost of doing business for a 16 yo boy to drive. from what I'm hearing, it could be worse

Teenagers really are shitty drivers.
I can't begin to count how many cars my nephews and nieces has been through. The high premiums suck, but its for good reason.

I'd love to have your rates!!!

At this point when my renewals come up every 6 months I'm just hoping they don't increase too much. I cant even fathom seeing a drop in premiums anymore. And my next driver comes online next July. My insurance may be a small house note after that.

I never asked my dad what it cost but at one time he had 5 vehicles and 5 drivers. 3 of them boys under 25. That couldn't have been cheap
