Anyone here own one of these? Model year 1999-2005.

Thinking about picking one up if I find one in the right condition for the right price. Anything I should make sure to look for? Pitfalls to avoid? Thanks in advance.

The better question would be: Does anyone on the OT not have experiences with Porche 996 Turbos?

The stepchild of the 911 series (996), thus the affordable price. Great cars if you can look past the headlights and interior.

I actually love the exterior styling. I know I'm weird.

ETA: I agree that the base model 996 carrera is hideous, but the turbos have just the right exterior styling tweaks that make it a great looking car imo.

Good interior (typically the seats and the dashboard) are going to be the hardest part of your search.

Body lines are not bad, the scrambled egg headlights... Not so much.

Loved that car in Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed.

That's all I got. I'd want want 2005- just for the round headlights, but that's me.

Yeah their rims look like something you would find on a Mazda.

I checked the Cadillac Cafe website just now and saw that DJ Trashy will be spinning on Saturday. Sounds right up my alley.

The price is right for these right now. Getting the turbo means you avoid the IMS bearing issues that plague the 996.

Yea that's kind of what my research has shown. They are "affordable" because people don't like the styling, they aren't air cooled, and because they (the turbos) have the stigma of the IMS issue, even though the Turbo's engine never had that problem.

From what I've been told by my mechanic and owners that is just about the worst iteration of a 911 you can buy.

What are they going for?

I don't care for the headlights personally, but don't know much about these really. I'd imagine they're still fun af to drive.

996 Turbos are well known to be some of the most reliable cars on the planet relative to the performance you get out of them. 200k miles is not at all uncommon. Hell, here's a 2002 with GT2-spec turbos that has 590k miles on it. LINK

IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER ABOUT THESE: when shopping for a 996 you will inevitably hear about the IMS bearing issue that can shred your engine at any given moment if not addressed.

This is something that afflicts every flat-six-powered Porsche of that era, 911s and Boxsters alike...

Except for the Turbos. The 996 Turbo motor uses the same basically invincible bottom end as the 930 Turbo motor, which was the OG Porsche turbocharged road car flat-six from the 70s; hence, the 996 Turbo motor doesn't have the IMS issue that the lesser 996s did. Big plus for the 996 Turbo over the regular cars in my book and just about everyone else's.

ETA looks like I'm late to the party about the IMS stuff, but oh well. Regardless, the main long-term big expense to consider on a 996 Turbo is, well, the turbos, and most people just put bigger ones on when the original ones go out, like the one in the link I posted above has had done.

Exactly. And the prices for Porsches are going through the roof. Remember, the rising tide lifts all boats. The 996 Turbo won't all of a sudden be a $100K car again, but you can probably drive it for 5 years and not lose any money on it. I'd say it's near the bottom of its depreciation curve.

^^^all of this

BAT 996 Turbo Recent Sales

$40k-$45k will get you a ton of car and one of the best values around. A 997 will be nearly double the price. The x50 package is the S package on the 996 through '04. Not sure on the premium that package brings.

Yes, the steering wheel is gross. The headlights on the turbo aren't as noticeably ugly especially on the silver cars.

Wow DJ Trashy seriously? I know him from way back in the day 15 years ago when he was DJing in Laffy. He's still at it huh?
