Go see an immunologist. They will run through tons of questions. You may need steroids for a few weeks which now doctors won't give.

Something to keep in mind... I do a mean eulogy. There won't be a dry eye in the house by the time I'm done.

RIP WC

I have something similar myself. It's really irritating because it doesn't behave like a normal postnasal/sinus infection with chest congestion.

I have no fever and very little sinus congestion at all. But I have a nagging cough. It attacks mostly when I breathe deep and exhale or when i laugh or bend forward suddenly. This shite has been around since the end of July.

I tried all the usual meds... OTC Mucinex, Allegra, etc... it's still hanging in there.

When the cough produces mucus, it's clear. No nasty shite.

I'm at wit's end. If not for its persistent quality, it would hardly be anything worth going to the doctor for.

Not to scare you, but it could be a sign of congestive heart failure. Are you overweight or genetically at risk for early heart disease? Catching this early is key.

I'm sure I could stand to lose a few pounds. No known issues with heart disease in my family. We're blessed with cancer.

You can probably rule out anything cardiovascular. More than likely a virus that is exacerbated by allergies. I'd still get a chest X-ray just for peace of mind

I would definitely ask the doctor about the inhaler and breathing treatments. I didn't really feel like it was helping me at the time, but it did go away within a couple of weeks of that. And (knock on wood), I haven't had any issues since. I can tell you I am QUICK to jump on some Mucinex the minute I think I feel chest congestion now. Four mos of coughing is a real bitch! Takes the fun out of everything

BTW Will, that AVI is the best EVER! I know its probably been mentioned a hundred times on here, but I laugh every damn time I see a post from you

I am covering ICU's right now and not in clinic. Your PCP should be able to handle this. If not, I can get you in next week. I do not post or lurk often, just had some down time on call to check the OT this morning and came back to see if things were being handled. I will check back tomorrow in this thread to see if you got into the doc. If not, will send my nurses info for an appt on Wed with a CXR and PFT's. Looking at some of the other info in the thread, I would suggest in the meantime:
1. NO OTC crap for cough.
2. You do not need an immunologist at this point.
3. I do not care if you get another Zpack...yes it could be pertussis as your age group has waning immunity from the vaccine, but Zpacks are designed for a post-antibiotic effect and it should have handled it. Occasionally a longer duration is necessary.
4. Lots of other diagnoses mentioned (ALS, lung CA, etc)...very unlikely. Common things are common and as one post pointed out, the 3 most common causes of cough in a nonsmoker are asthma, GERD and post nasal drip (upper airway cough syndrome). And these are by far and away the most common.

True story.

Now who...that's right. I did.

Also, studies show that HONEY is as good, or better than many meds for cough
