Should I call them and say I want to cancel it, and see what they say?
Yes. At the worst you can say you changed your mind before they actually cut it off, and the discounts vary depending on how good of a poker face you have. When I called I had already decided to cancel for sure and didn't haggle, so I can't really tell you exactly what to say.

The best strategy that has worked for me has been calling to cancel service.
Once you get to someone simply tell him that it has gotten to expensive and you are exploring options with other providers. See what they can do for you. (Shoot for a 20-30% reduction if keeping same services)
For some reason different people seem to be more helpful. So if you're not happy with what they are willing to give you, don't be afraid to hang up and call back the next day.

Cox has the worst customer service department I've ever dealt with. Went with UVerse. 100x better.

that's a pretty good idea. Gonna try that next time I need to speak with someone

I called and they offered me nothing. They were just like, your monthly bill is currently $37 a month.
I was like, that's too expensive for how much I watch it.
They were like if we cut out the HBO, it's $22 a month. Is $22 a month too expensive for you, sir?
Then I just felt like a poor and decided to keep it.

I called last week about a recurring problem and the automated response asked if I had called about the problem before. I said yes, and it hung up on me! Called back said no, and I was transferred to a real person.
frick you cox!

I am about to pull the plug on Cox as well.

How the frick were you getting HBO with just basic channels? I was told that was like dividing by zero.
Posted on 6/19/14 at 11:26 am to Tactical1
I don't even know why I kept it for $22 a month. I don't even watch it hardly. Whatever.

I have the box or whatever. Apartment is subsidized Cox (or included in our rent) and we just pay the difference.
So that was $37 a month with HBO.
Now with Sports package...$22 a month.

I have sat on the line 30+ minutes every day this week trying to cancel my TV service. I believe they're doing this on purpose trying to get people to hang up.
Go into the office.
Check and mate.

I've been planning on calling them to try and negotiate a lower rate for a while. I may end up waiting to see if they pick up the SEC network, it would suck if I got locked into a contract with them for a lower rate and they didn't have it.
Bill is currently around $200 a month for phone, internet, and two DVR boxes.
Shooting for $30 a month off, sound reasonable?

I've been with Cox, DirecTV, Dish, CenturyLink, and Comcast. All have equally shitty customer service. The industry as a whole tries every tactic to keep you as a customer. Comcast was particularly bad about honoring 12-mo. deals that were verbally negotiated. 6 months in, I'd get a rate increase and fight tooth and nail to get it corrected. It was when they didn't honor it that I switched to DirecTV and CenturyLink.
I'd suck a dick for Google Fiber right now in Denver.

I gotcha. Once upon a time I asked if I could have just the 75 basic channels in HD with HBO and the girl on the phone thought I was asking her to carry out a hit. Even got her to admit that's what she would have if they allowed it. Anything beyond standard def basic (just co-ax into tv) immediately jumps to 1000+ channels of absolute horse shite and a $100 bill.
