Can somebody give me a quick breakdown re AT&T Next? Is it a scam?

So they are pushing people to basically finance these overpriced phones for 30 months? Is the price the same or cheaper if you just buy them up front? If not, then what is the catch here?
I gave my 3 year old iPhone a dip in the pool, so I'm gonna be getting another one soon. Just trying not to get ripped off too bad. Feels like I'm going to a car dealership. TIA for any tips.

The "sell" is that they get you used to paying a note on your phone. When your term is up and your phone is paid off you can simply trade it in for a new one. Aka your Next one.
In reality if you follow that logic you're handing them a phone you just paid off to start the finance cycle all over again.
ETA if you keep your phone past the end date your bill should decrease by the amount of the monthly phone payment.

I didn't know you had to trade your phone in after you finish paying it off. That's insane.

Verizon moved to a similar setup, no more subsidized phones.
Might want to consider getting a used one from sites like swappa

You don't have to trade it in

Oh ok. Yeah I'm in a similar situation as OP because my 4 year old phone is starting to die on me. I'm going to check out prices for just buying phones outright, but if it is zero percent interest I might as well slap it on my phone bill.

You don't have to trade it in if you pay it off. You *can* trade it in if you've made x amount of payments and still owe without paying it off, or you can still finish paying it off and keep it.

The kicker is that they claim the phone's were subsidized in your bill, so you were actually paying for the full price of the phone anyway, not really getting it for $100, but yet the bill never went down once the 2 year contract was up or I bought a phone under the next plan. It's all a ripoff. Only good thing is that they don't charge any interest so it's no savings at all to buy from them in full. Might as well just spread it out over 30 months. I hate at&t, but I'm too deep into them, especially since I have directv and the at&t unlimited bundled.

No it's not, the pricing is just more clear and in your face. Prior to this, the cell providers were subsidizing the majority of the phone, but you better believe the pricing of service reflected that. Now the pricing for the phone is clearer for the consumer. Some people don't like it but it's mostly from an 'ignorance is bliss' standpoint.

Pretty scammy. Buy a phone out right and don't bother with these installment plans if you can help it.

It worked for us to get off of the old unlimited plan and go to a small data plan base on our usage.
The decrease in the amount of the actual plan more than offset the cost of two new phones.
We take care of our phones so they'll last us longer than the payment plan, and we'll ride them til they die.

Yep. That's how I am with mine too. I'm trying one last hard reset to see if that helps, and if it's still all buggy and laggy, it's new phone time.

But an unlocked phone.
Pay about 200-400 for "last year's" model.as opposed to $750+ for the latest one.

Google Project Fi is the way to go

I fought it, but finally caved in. Agree it sux, but doubtful it reverts back to the "good ole days". One can hope

There's no interest on it
The plan is just dividing the price of the phone over a couple years
You can also buy an older model phone for cheap

What I did. Got a mint condition 6S Plus for close to 1/2 price on what a new one costs from AT&T.

False. The plan goes down 25 bucks, which is about what the monthly payment is

I like how people act like AT&T or any carrier dictates the prices of these Apple/Samsung/LG products. On top of that, the older phones never cost $650+ like the ones today do, do you know how much money cell companies would be losing if they did it the old way still? Be upset with Apple, Samsung, and so on.
