Can Anyone Recommend A Book On The History Of Slavery?

At first, when they were taking down the confederate statues in New Orleans my thoughts were "I can understand how that can be offensive to black people. There are statues of people who were fighting for states to have the right to determine, on their own, whether slavery should be legal or not. So I can sort of understand it", but then as it started to spread and now you hear people wanting to take down statues of people who owned slaves, I started thinking.
Slavery was something of it's time that had gone as far back as the Roman Empire (probably before then, but I don't know much about slavery before that time). As for as slavery in America, people bought slaves from Africa. Not to mention, there was slavery in Africa. And if I recall, there are still parts of Africa in which there are still forms of slavery going on.
As fast as all of this happened, it seems like there is more to it than a group of people crying about how these statues offend them.
I pretty much agree with what Charley Barkley says about the whole thing.

Is this something created by politicians in order to get people worked up about something, so that it will give them a reason to go out and vote?

Black people in New Orleans couldn't give 2 fricks about those statues.

That's kind of my point. It seems like its the politicians making this a big issue for some reason.

I was in NOLA the week all the statue crap was going on. I talked to at least a dozen different folks, African-Americans, and not one of them gave a rat's arse.
In fact, most of them were pissed at Landrieu for spending the money foolishly.
One man told me the US mail truck could not get down his street for the pot holes.
A couple others told me they never knew the statues were there.

“I’ve always ignored them!” he said. “Rick, I’m 54 years old. I’ve never thought about those statues a day in my life. I think if you asked most black people to be honest, they ain’t thought a day in their life about those stupid statues. What we as black people need to do: We need to worry about getting our education, we need to stop killing each other, we need to try to find a way to have more economic opportunity and things like that. Those things are important and significant. You know, I’m wasting time and energy [if I’m] screaming at a neo-Nazi, or [saying] ‘Man, you’ve got to take this statue down.’ ”
Once again, Charles Barkley is the man.

Your subject question and the OP don't quite match, but if you are interested in a good history of slavery and slave resistance in the South I would suggest Genovese's Roll, Jordan, Roll.
