If any OTers hit the golf courses this weekend you felt the rath of July in Louisiana.

After being outside for 4+ hours, I felt like I had run about 5 miles. I was just curious and started looking at online estimators for how many calories are burned by playing 18 holes of golf with a cart. The range was roughly 700 - 1250.

My question for the OT geniuses:

If this estimate is based on normal weather (say 70-75 degrees) what kind of additional percentage of calories are likely being burned? If you've played golf when it's 70 and played when it's a heat index of 103, you know the energy used is vastly different.

My personal opinion, albeit an uneducated one, is about 20-30% Seems like your resting heart rate is much higher when you're in those brutal conditions.

You're just sweating out water and getting dehydrated.

I thought your body uses more calories when its really cold than when its really hot.

Generating heat is metabolically expensive

All the budwesiers you were slamming in the cart canceled out any of the calories you would've burned

It's all just water weight. If you are drinking enough water you would net zero pounds lost just being in the heat. It shouldn't be look at as a calorie burner.

Why do you think you'd burn more cals in the heat? I'd think you'd burn less. On a 70 degree day, part of your cals go to maintaining body temp of 98.6. Takes less to do so on a hot day...

But what do I know?

You actually burn more calories in cold weather (increased metabolism required to maintain warmth). The main thing you lose in hot weather is water (i.e., dehydration), and some electrolytes - that's why you feel more tired.

ETA: Already discussed, I see.

Fascinating analysis Dr. Tenforty1728. As a fellow science doctor, I would wholly agree with your conclusion. Furthermore, I'd suggest that the icecream you ate while playing could potentially add muscle mass to your deltoids. I appreciate your input on the matter and look forward to future insights you may feel compelled to share.

In addition, while it is that hot, you are much less active. So you are actually burning less calories. No good comes from the heat.

Y'all don't think your heart rate is accelerated when it's 98 degrees outside?

You sweat out water weight. I can weigh 190 one night and if I don't drink a lot of water working the next day, can weigh 180 when I come home

If I rehydrate, I'll get back to 185-190 pretty quickly. When I hydrate properly during the day, I drink 1.5 gallons without pissing
