Not always the case with designer.

They're all cheap. Women buy the name brand to impress other women. There's nothing special about any "Designer" product except the brand.
I think this is the answer.
It's to compete with other women. Crab in the bucket mentality and all that.
Women get all dolled up and dressed up when going out not to attract men. But to compete with other women.
Same concept with purses and clothing in general. "If Wanda has a $500 purse, if I have anything less than a $501 purse, I won't be the top crab in the bucket!"

My husband bought me a Kate Spade bag for Christmas two years ago. I'd say, and think he'd agree, that it is worth the extra money. I use it pretty much every day and it's not even close to needing replacing. It should last at least a few more years, and I can 100% tell you the cheaper bags I have bought didn't last as long.
If there is much of a differnce in the $300 to $1,000 is a better question, IMO.

You can't go wrong with a LV Pochette accessories bag with the long cross body strap. It's a great little bag for going out - holds the basics: keys, phone, compact, lipstick and CC. They cost about $500. Will never go out of style and will last forever. Goes with everything from jeans to a nice dress. I got one in 1988 - Carried it till it gave out 3 years ago. Bought another.
Kelly Wynne, Annabelle Ingall, Rag & Bone, are newer nice brands for some women who might be a little tired of all the logos.

Same goes for purses.
Like HC said....more expensive purses will last you much longer than a cheaper one. Again..I also own cheaper ones. I have a $20 Target purse I bought that always gets complements. It's my go to bag if I don't care about getting my nicer purse dirty. But I know that Target purse will not last me several years, nor do I expect it to.

I bought my wife one of the plain brown leather Coach purses a couple of years ago and it just sits in the closet.
There is my ancedote about Coach purses.

What's funny is that even though I have a handful of bags that retail for around $400 in my closet....I never spent that much on them. I always found mine on sale. That or I combined my own money with money from Christmas gifts(ex cash or gift cards) to get a bag I wanted. I've never paid more than $150 out of my own pocket for any of my purses.
No way would I spend $1000 on a purse though. Unless I won the lottery or something. Then I would have some serious fun shopping.
I've had my current Kate Spade striped purse for almost a year. Still use it most every day and still love it. Kate Spade purses are def made very well.

The markup on womens "designer" products is 200% or more. Higher priced items may be more than 300%.
Pricing is not about what it cost to produce, it's what they can be sold for. The name tag usually raises the margin considerably. This is one reason womens items cost more than mens.

Well I know that. I'm saying there is more time put into a "designer" bag then one you can buy for $20 so it will last longer. I just doubt there is much difference from the $300-$1000 range in quality.

My husband bought me an expensive purse that sits in my closet. . . it does not have dividers to keep my gun secure and easy to access.

Yeah, they're all made in china anyway.
Some may have better materials though being made of cotton or leather and not synthetic products. Even if it says "made in Italy" it's still being made in China.

Thank me later
Got the gf a LV on there. Compared it to an original and literally no difference and actually more durable.

Aspy, I literally only own the one KS bag I mentioned. I absolutely love it, and I threw away all the other cheap ones I owned.
My favorite purse is my ID in my husband's wallet. I don't have to carry anything then.

Why in the hell would you buy your lady something that she believes will make her fit in with the other soccer moms?
