I bought a 1999 jeep cherokee from port city auto and its been a champ, inline 6 is the best engine, IMHO

Go buy a 4Runner 4.0 V6.. It's one of the most reliable mid-size SUV's you can get

I have had good luck with most Japanese used cars. Stay away from Euro cars. Repairs are very costly. I also would stay from GM and Chrysler

They had a pretty bad reputation back in the 1990's and early 2000's- the Wranglers were easy to work on, which was nice since they broke down alot.
I bought my 2006 used in 2006 with 13,000 miles, and since then, it's been oil changes, tire rotations and batteries, with the exception of the clock spring & water pump. If you can get one with 40,000 or less, like these, you'll get a lot of good miles

I love my Highlander. I would recommend one to anyone.

I've had two and I'll never go back. The kind of things that break on them are the things that there is not preventative maintenance can safe guard. For example, you can just be driving and the dome light will fall off, or the review mirror. The worst was the window regulator cable. Spent over 2k over the life of the vehicle digging the damn glass out of the door to replace a small plastic cable that costs like 300 bucks plus labor. Drove me crazy.

The rav4s after 2000 are prone to trans issues. Newer body style went back to an aisin trans.
Honda automatics require you keep the fluid perfect to last if you abuse a little.
Avoid the 3.0 taco. The 2.7 is probably the most reliable mptor ever except for a plymouth motor in the 60s whos name eludes me atm.
No murano. Excellent power, but too many in the junk yard with blown motors.
For american brands.... the 5.0 explorer defines reliable...but fords have weak suspension components.
The GM offerings....eh the 4.3 blazer was the last reliabke small item they made.
From jeep...if it isnt the 4.0 or the small diesel...back away. Even then go in knowing you will be spending coin.
The newer japanese stuff made elsewhere is not as reliablr...or abusable i should say.
My wife and I ditched the new vehicles we had last year for cheap small suvs with 4x4...and then suzuki left the US market...which doesnt matter really...because nothing ever breaks...and maintenance items like belts and hoses are easily had.
Whats your required fuel mileage, level of comfort, and level of reliability... thatll tell me a lot.
To me. The ability to go anywhere cheaply and reliably trumps everything else.
If you can stand the styling...the original scion xb in an auto is probably the most reliable small car of the last 15 years...and you can fit a ridiculous amount of stuff in the toaster.
A deer retired mine at 240k...it ran as new.

A buddy of mine has a newer Chevrolet Equinox. They are surprisingly spacious. He claims he gets upper 20s on the highway. I know a couple of people from work who have older versions (2005-2006) and they seem to have held up very well. The people I know who have them all seem love them.
I had a Trailblazer that was incredibly reliable but the gas mileage wasn't very good.
I'd look into the Equinox, CRV, and Rav4.....if you want something that can tow, look into the used Pathfinders, Envoys, and Trailblazers.

This. I have a 2008 Tacoma Pre-Runner and have had zero problems with it thus far (52k miles).

The Nissan Rogue gets pretty solid reviews and gets great gas mileage.

I like jeeps but they putting dodge parts in them. Like a poster earlier said. I had to fix 2 window regulators and it wasn't cheap. Wrangler is prob the only way to go with jeeps. I owned 2 and could fix anything myself on it. They just weren't good 1st cars. When I have enough money I will get a wrangler for a second car.
my next vehicle will be a Tacoma. Been saving up to get rid of my grand Cherokee.

My dad's Toyota Tacoma is a fricking rock. He never services it and it gives zero fricks. Really good truck for just about anything

I had to fix a couple of regulators in my wife's Liberty, but they were under warranty thank goodness. Like I said, I haven't had any problems out of my Jeep for almost 9 years ('06 model purchased in August '05)

Tacoma. I got mine a few years back and I can trade it in for more than I paid for it. (verified when I took it looking at Crossovers)
