Thinking of buying my kids a puppy for Christmas. Considering a maltese because small and hypoallergenic.
I'm not really into dogs but I know my kids would love it. They've been asking forever.
Anyone have a maltese? Whats your experience?
Any experience with other small, hypoallergenic dogs?

We had one when I was growing up. I liked him but he was a prissy little shithead. He nipped at your wrist every time you would pet him. He calmed down as he got older which was when I liked him but he was a handful for the first few years.

Had one and it was a great dog. Kept her inside and she would play with the kids then she would jump in my chair and just chill. Not overly hyper like some small dogs. One coat dog so they don't shed. We used some stuff called angel eyes for her eyes, they get that crusty crap on them. We miss our little part of the family but I don't want another dog.

My aunt and uncle have a couple. They're little yap yap dogs, but they seem to be all right for what they are. A lot probably depends on individual temperament and training, but they don't seem to be aggressive little bastards.

This is nothing that a swift uppercut to the jaw won't fix immediately. My wife can attest to this philosophy.

I guess it depends on the dog. We have two different friends who got a Maltese from the same breeder and theirs is not hyper at all.

We have one, and he is absolutely the best dog I could hope for. His personality, and disposition are excellent, and he doesn't shed. I would own another in a heartbeat. He is fantastic with kids, fwiw.

I have kids and wish I had a small dog. I have a lab and basset hound now and live in a HOA neighborhood with a small fenced backyard. They take huge dumps and I bury it with a shovel. Awful.

Loom at cairn terriers too (toto from whizard of oz). I've had both and the cairns are better. No shedding. Smarter. Deafness runs in Maltese breed so check for that.

ive noticed that the small dogs I've had don`t really seem to like kids, always chalked it up self preservation because they are small there`s an instinct to avoid kids that tend to be aggressive, get em a lab...ha wrote that before i saw Rhino`s remark, larger dogs do have a downside too.

If the dog is for the kids (and not you) why not take them to Petsmart or whatever and let them pick out and adopt a puppy?

Kids won't care if it's purebred or not, as long as it's cute.
