I never really had a "small" dog before I got the yorkie.I always had medium sized pound mutts. I like all dogs. I've basically been obsessed with them my whole life, they are nearly perfect. The Yorkie though has been my favorite. The perfect temperament for a family dog.About 10 lbs full grown.

Havanese. Got ours 5 years ago. Best dog ever. Hard to find down here but every once in a while there will be a breeder selling puppies.

Had a Yorkie before the Maltese. She was hyper as hell. I guess it depends on the dog.

Yeah. Mine is totally chill and gentle. Definitly depends on the dog, and it's earliest environment.

Maltese are great. Very affectionate, love to play, smart.
I'd recommend a maltese and dog from the pound. Make it's a small one, and for some reason it seems having one male, one female is a good mix rather than two males or two females. Just make sure they get fixed. I think it's good for dogs to have another dog around.

How old are your kids? I sure hope they don't kill the dog.

If your worried about allergies buy your child a fish or hermit crab.

My family owned one. They are very hard to house train and they have separation anxiety. (lots of small breeds are like this)

If you have son having a Maltese will make him gay

We have 3 of them. Two females and a male. Very good lap dogs. Highly recommend them for inside dog.
2 huskies outside.
Not really the best dog for kids. Very mature small dogs and kids can be rough.

We have a Maltipoo, and he's freaking awesome. Sweetest guy you've ever seen. Stubborn, but really that's his worst issue. Kids love him. Already told my wife that once he passes on, no more dogs, because he broke the mold.

We have a Maltipoo (Maggie), a Havanese, and a Llasa Apso.
All small white dogs, about the same size.... none of them are yappy. The Llasa is like a big dog in a small dog's body... serene. So is the Havanese, for that matter. The Havanese is very sweet.
But Maggie is my special love. She's a hoot, really. Smart, funny, knows a few tricks. A lot more athletic than the other two. Loves people but wants to rule over other dogs. Love her perkiness.
So my recommendation? A Maltipoo. You will love him/her.

I'd recommend a Brittany. They're very mellow and don't require much time/energy, and they are great with kids.

Those things are more like a gerbil than a dog. Useless. You want small, get a rat terrier.

f the dog is for the kids (and not you) why not take them to Petsmart or whatever and let them pick out and adopt a puppy
and with this logic, let them decide what they want to eat for dinner every night too. Kids wont take a second look at whatever dog they pick within a week.

Miniature Schnauzer, I am not a small dog person at all and love ours. Great with kids

Go get a German Shepherd instead. You'll be so happy with your purchase that you'll send me a Christmas card next year.

Wife and I got a maltepoo about 4 months ago. He has been an absolute joy and extremely friendly dog. Neighborhood children love him, as do our grown children. I believe he would be a perfect addition to a family with young kids. Just my two cents. He's 6 pounds and shouldn't get any bigger.
