First off, I understand why you want to build something. It gives you the sense of "going to work" even though its only a few steps away.
Now to your question. If budget isn't a huge deal I would go with MIL suite. Doing a shed type deal is going to bring you nothing in terms of resale value. If you are in your forever home then you may want to do more of a shed type structure just because it will be cheaper. I would also put a bathroom in it either way. If you have to go into your house to use the bathroom there is a good chance you'll get distracted by something, especially if your kids are home.
Lastly, like someone else mentioned, I would definitely consult a CPA. I can't tell you for certain exactly how much or what you will be able to deduct/expense, but you will definitely have some.

You need to spread out your family more or you and the wife are going to get sick of one another. Rent an office elsewhere.

Why not?
I'd think it would be good to add functionality like as you mentioned earlier a mother in law/guest suite or something.

Its built on top a slab with a pressure treated 3/4" T&G plywood floor on 2x10 @ 16"OC. Slab or pressure treated floor the price difference isn't very much.

Don't go cheap and do it right the first time and build a MIL suite.

Problem with a mother in law suite is you may end up living in it when she's pissed off.

Build it underground and it can double as a tornado shelter.

get the office out of the house, don't go too small, have room for storage

Sorry, poor phrasing on my part. He advised building it full livable, cautioned about not doing so. He said he got f’d with a nearly complete structure he built on a house he sold.
