My wife and I have been knocking around the idea of building a backyard office. She works from home, and the separate space would do her some good. I got word today that I will likely transition to working from a home office in the coming months.

The biggest dilemma is what is the best way to go about it. Do you build an inexpensive rectangle that can house both offices, or go bigger and make a mother-in-law suite that would be more useful.

I'm also starting from square one. The most we've done is walk around some of the larger "Tuff Sheds" at Home Depot to get an idea of how big particular sized spaces feel.

We have a decent sized lot, and lots of people in our neighborhood have built workshops or have big outdoor kitchen type spaces. No neighborhood associations to worry about.

Just wondering who would be your first call? Contractor, find specific plans first?

I was figuring on something large enough to do a mini-split system.

Luckily that is my job. I just get to do it from home now.

I would go on Thumbtack and get some quotes from carpenters and compare to prices of pre-built sheds...

Get with your CPA (or do some research first) and you can likely deduct every penny associated with the build. At least I was able to since I own my company. Not sure how that works if you are a W-2 employee.

Budget is fairly wide open. There's actually a two story TuffShed at the Home Depot in Gonzales that I like the bones of. I know shite for framing. I can do trim carpentry but zero clue about framing up a structure. That shed is roughly $14k as an unfinished shell if I remember correctly. That doesn't seem like an unreasonable start.

I'd probably be happiest to get a slab poured and a structure framed & roofed and then be content to do the rest myself.

You seem to have difficulty making decisions alone. Are you sure working from home is such a good idea?

Well I've had several friends warn me about not making it a full livable space. At the same time, I don't forsee moving any time in the near future (10+ year time span)

One thing I can count on in the OT is strong opinions one way or the other. Easier to hear some first hand shite or success stories on here before going down a path.

Prairieville. Their $14k building isn't much of a shed. It's probably 16x20 with a barn/gambrel roof and a second floor.

Use your existing home. You can write off the home office, part of kitchen, restroom etc.

Saw a link advertising small outdoor converted sheds a while back. #6 blew my mind.
