BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A veteran law enforcement officer will undergo surgery after he crashed his police vehicle while responding to a call.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the officer was dispatched to a call about an activated alarm at roughly 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. The officer was driving on I-12 between Millerville and Sherwood Forest Blvd. when he swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle.
After swerving, the officer lost control and hit the median.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The officer was taken to the hospital due to a serious head injury. Officials say he is scheduled to have surgery later today.
The officer has only worked with the Baton Rouge Police Department for less than a year, but he previously worked with the Zachary Police Department.
Been a tough week for BR LEOs.

Its a legit question.
Are police not liable for reckless driving?

Same exact thing happens to you and I and we're not leaving the scene without a ticket being written.

I don't disagree, and I found his comment funny.

OK, he still lost control of his vehicle. I feel bad for the guy and hope he recovers just fine. Doesn't change the fact that he was responsible or his wreck based on the info we have.

A surgeon is operating on a critical trauma patient. Going fast. fricks up and pt dies.
You think hes not getting sued?

I almost guarantee you he was driving in a manor that was putting other drivers in danger. I've seen it a thousand times.

I'm saying he won't be ticketed.

Maybe he should be. Had he hit another vehicle and injured someone, you think there will be no consequences because he was responding to a call?

If he caused an accident, the City-Parish is paying the injured party from their settlement fund.
It's a legitimate question. Police Officers are allowed to speed when responding to an emergency, but they are still required operate the vehicle safely.

I'm wondering if he had lights going; if so, driver in the vehicle which caused him to swerve should've moved out of the way. However, many times (more often than not) I've seen police flying on interstates/highways without lights (assuming on a call), running up on asses of vehicles so quickly, I was sure they would wreck. Don't know the particulars here, but any time cops are on an official call flying down the highway/interstate, they need to be lit up & siren on when in traffic.

He won't be ticketed. Cops are above the law.

And none of us are responsible for responding to a possible home invasion at 1 in the morning. He was performing his job. Do you get ticketed if you get a paper cut in the copy room? Accidents on the job happen...regardless of occupation. Leave it at that. Some genuine assholes who have no respect for what law enforcement endures on a daily basis in BR.

I appreciate the officer's service to Baton Rouge. I wish they were paid more and had a Mayor-President that supported them.
That doesn't exempt them from operating their vehicle safely and dealing with the repercussions, considering he would be at fault and the tax-payers are on the hook for any damages.
