BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - To say the Baton Rouge Police Union blasted city officials for a recent settlement with demonstrators would be putting it lightly.

Sgt. Bryan Taylor, president of the police union, released a hotly worded statement Tuesday night and will release it to everyone else Wednesday. He said the city officials basically paid the protesters ransom money.

The statement criticizes the East Baton Rouge Metro Council and other parish officials for agreeing to pay demonstrators of Alton Sterling's death $100,000 rather than risk a trial.

The statement reads in part:

quote:

This payout has been a slap in the face to all officers involved who succeeded in keeping our interstates open and our businesses from being ravaged and looted. Did our council and parish attorney even consider the impact this settlement will have on the ability of law enforcement to do an already difficult job in the future without the support of the Metro Council?

Unfortunately, in 2016, it would've cost the city more than 100k to fight it. They should be pissed with the way the court system is set up, not because of a risk/reward decision.

I know a few of the out of town law enforcement agencies that came to assist are now having 2nd thoughts on sending their officers/deputies back here to assist in the future because of this.

That $100,000 is going to cost the city a lot more during the next round of protests without their help

They're majority black and sided with BLM over their own city and people. Not a surprise.

Wasn't a reason for not prosecuting the arrested protesters because of cost?

Good for him. Every MC member that voted for that settlement should be removed from office, immediately.

Interesting that word of this settlement only came AFTER the election for MC seats. Every council member that voted in favor of this has committed fraud upon the voters.

This right here. You've now set a terrible precedent that shows that civil unrest can turn into a lucritive business. They just greased up that slippery slope
