i doubt they will have a baseball team. These will not be fun sports schools. No football games, no homecoming, no hot cheerleaders or pranks. none of that. this is a nerds paradise. the math team is the strongest team there.

It's not a deal breaker for him or me. I have no illusions that my son will play MLB.

Would be great to have him take AP classes in HS so he would start as a sophomore in college
I would think hard about this. I placed out of basically my entire freshman year, and I struggled carrying a tough academic load and trying to get adjusted to college life. In hindsight, I would have done better taking the regular freshman curriculum while I got my feet wet being away from home for the first time.

brh doesnt have great teachers either, but it will challenge him. more then any school in br

What a stupid statement.

why would people leave lab school .
Posted on 11/29/16 at 6:29 pm to Boo Krewe
I was surprised so many girls left. Most went to St Joseph's, Episcopal and BRMHS. Basically the school is corrupt in admissions practices and allows a private donor to pay for the recruits to go to school which spreads the word and increases said benefactors business. Many students are complaining about the recruited athletes getting special treatment. Such as getting to take test in a special room where cheating is easy. I think many parents do not agree with the message this sends to their children. If you look at the demographics of u high from kindergarten thru 8th grade and compare them to the highschool demographics they change drastically. Look at a 6th grade football photo and compare it to the same class 5 years later. Most of those kids have quit football to make room for the new kids that have been recruited.

I heard lab school kids were spoiled and rude, and they partied alot. hot girls when I was there.
Ive got to say, St Joes is proablaby the best school in BR. I never got with any of the girls there, but most ive met are very smart

Many are spoiled and some not so much. Partying is worse than the Catholic schools because the Catholic schools will kick you out for relatively minor infractions even on the weekends. Uhigh is a public school cough cough so it does not have jurisdiction over the students on the weekends. A current Alabama player had 2 kids by the time he left Uhigh. Catholic would not let this fly. Head coach is all about winning and recruiting. He can be seen at BREC football games on Saturday mornings evaluating talent for the future. He needs the talent because he cannot call a decent play.

UHigh is a small pond school.
Send your kid to BRHS or Lee and let them develop life skills among a diverse group that is more likely to mimic real life. They will be much better prepared for college and their career.

I have two at BRHMS now and a third headed there next year. We had been at Parkview Baptist (academic joke-nice people) and for one year in Ascension. My daughter was student of the year for her primary school, so that eased her path into the Magnet program in Baton Rouge. A common path is Westdale Heights Academic Magnet, Sherwood Middle Magnet and then BRMHS.
BRMHS is a really great school and if your kid is bright you want to send him there. Camp out at the EBRPSS and annoy them. It's worth it if you have a really bright one . They will challenge him. Downside-LOTS of homework and projects.
My oldest is average in her peer group at BRMHS and she has the Honors TOPS award at LSU and killing it by my standards. She's nothing special compared to a lot of these kids though-there are kids every year going to the Ivy Leagues, the military academies, Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford etc. So many bright and ambitious kids.
I have great hope for Lee High. I would not hesitate to apply. I don't think they are going to really tolerate any crap so I wouldn't worry about it being a bad environment. More like Real Life 101-wkids that are coming from working class families. I would not expect it to be as good as BRMHS academically, but still really good. It's an impressive place and I now they are really trying hard over there to attract some good, smart kids.
Good luck. Shake the haters. The magnet program is very solid.

I went to BRHS in 9th grade before moving out of state. I wish my future kid would have the opportunity to go to a school like that. I don't think there's anything close to BRHS in Jackson/Madison area.

Yup, pretty sure that's the only way I got into BRHS

Solid advice. Thanks all.
We will apply to BRMHS with Lee Magnet HS as second choice. Will also apply to University High. Will look at another private school as well. From there we should have solid options to choose from.

why would people leave lab school
From what I've heard about the 8th grade exodus, parent were demanding special classes just for their kids. I only know one family well enough to comment but I would say leaving was the right choice. I don't think U High was a good fit for them and they are very happy with their decision.
Our school scores are comparable to BRMHS so I don't buy that we are academically inferior. My guess is it is more about the stricter academic culture that other people mentioned.
Some of the things Roadhandler mentioned are real issues but overall we are very happy there. We are middle class and my kids are not spoiled. That varies by class. It's much worse in the older kid's grade than the younger.
I know a couple of kids who left Uhigh for BRMHS a few years ago so these non-feeder kids definitely aren't locked out.
Oldest kid has a friend at Lee. He likes it but doesn't consider it as challenging as U High.
tl;dr: U High and BRMHS are great, Lee is good (probably trending upward as it gets more established) and if your kid is a gifted athlete make sure you put it on the U High application

Update...As I previously stated, we applied to the magnet program with BRMHS as first choice and Lee Magnet HS as second choice. We received the letter today that he was accepted into BRMHS for 9th grade.
I am super pumped up as I thought it was a long shot for a kid coming from a private school since pre-k.

Baton Rouge High.
My overall experience was amazing...although it was 17 years ago.
Extremely diverse group of kids and everyone pretty much got along with everyone. DIdn't matter if you were the super studious one or "BMOC".
Proud of all of my old classmates from Baton Rouge High...very much a United Nations and they all seem to be very successful.
Alumni support is also strong, as we are all very proud to be from there. I've donated more money to BRHS than I have LSU.
