BR Area - Anyone Have an Air Conditioning Maintenance Plan on House?

Curious who you use and what it costs. Called a place this morning and they were pitching $15 per unit, per month. I have 3 units so that'd be $540 per month. $540 annually for maintenance seems a bit much. I change the filters and the house is fairly new.
Seems like I might be better off just having a company come out and do a once over of the equipment.
So homeowners. What's your approach to AC maintenance? Do you use someone? What does it cost? I'm basically calling because one of the zones seems to get cold but it never kicks off.

I sell the house when I think the AC is about to break.

I did at one point because I was having some work done and the savings at the time was enough to cover a year's worth of the plan, so basically I was going to get the next two tune-ups for free.
I canceled after that. I never even considered getting it on my current house.

Sounds like a thermostat problem.

I have bought them in the past when I was having work done. The cost savings on the parts made up the difference of the maintenance plan. I also knew I had a small freon leak so it saved on that every year too.
I just got a brand new unit installed and bought a maintenance plan through AIG for 150 bucks for 3 years. Supposed to cover all labor. New unit has 10 years parts warranty.
Ask if their is a pay in full discount? Also by being a maintenance plan member you are supposed to be bumped to the top of the list for problems and not pay "weekend or night" rates.

I am guessing he meant $540/year.

I wouldn't pay more than $400 for a biannual plan. A spring and winter checkup is all you need.

Yeah yeah yeah. Annually. Whatever.

waste of money, cant fix whats not broke and it has the exact odds of breaking 5 minutes after they leave or never.
its throwing money away so someone else can clean/replace the air filter for you and constantly opening the system to check pressures can actually "cause" it to start leaking by wearing the seals out on the valves.
IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT
by the way, I spent 40 yrs fixing a/c & htg biggest joke in the business is idiots paying for service contracts lol

Same here. Needed some work, they said it would be an instant savings if I signed up, total price with membership came out to about 150 cheaper. Plus discount on any other issues that may occur (didn't change the outdoor unit after the flood). I'll cancel at the end of the year.

You should buy a home warranty like everyone else. That way anytime anything breaks, they can tell you it's magically not covered by the warranty.

I walk into the manufacturing plant and tell them what I need built for me.

You should have it checked twice a year....early spring (for cooling) and early fall (for heating.) As noted above, service contracts for residential are a waste of money.

Appreciate the honest thought from someone who worked in that industry.
I'm just going to have this reputable company come do a checkup on the unit I'm concerned with. I've been changing the filters as prescribed.
