Blue Bell Listeria contamination kills 3

For all you Blue Bell fans beware of the following food safety issue they are currently involved in.
"Three deaths were reported among these five patients.
Of the four ill people for whom information is available on the foods eaten in the month before Listeria infection, all four consumed milkshakes made with a single-serving Blue Bell brand ice cream product called “Scoops” while they were in the hospital.
Three strains of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from Blue Bell brand ice cream products obtained in 2015 in South Carolina and Texas had pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns that were indistinguishable from those of Listeria monocytogenes isolates obtained from samples from four patients.
The Blue Bell brand ice cream products with tests showing Listeria monocytogenes were ice cream Scoops, Chocolate Chip Country Cookie Sandwiches, and Great Divide Bars.
Blue Bell Creameries reported that these products were removed from the market in March 2015. However, contaminated ice cream products may still be in the freezers of consumers, institutions, and retailers.

Should have served Kleinpeter, amirite?

At least Klienpeter didn't make a killing in the ice cream venture.

That could be Kleinpeter's new slogan. "It may taste like shite, but at least it won't kill you"

All that science talk got my head spinning. Basically you eat bluebell and you die. DAMN

Most healthy people can pull through this, but if Listeria hits someone with an already weakened immune system, look out.
I've been in Quality for ice cream manufacturing the last 14 years and this is a worst nightmare scenario.
Plants have routine environmental testing of areas like the floors, drains, equipment frames etc to track Listeria. This issue is a direct reflection of that program and sanitation.

They said they isolated the machine responsible for the contamination and took it offline. I wonder if that's credible.

Somewhat on topic but question for you.
So if some brat teenager at the Yummilicious yogurt shop half-asses their cleaning of machines can it be dangerous?

It shouldnt be about 1 piece of equipment, I'm surprised they are still producing in general. They need to clean that entire plant and erradicate it. Listeria will easily spread by foot traffic to other areas.
If it was me, I would have shut the entire plant down, began cleaning and not started back up until tests from swabbing multiple areas come back clean.

If the yogurt was contaminated with a pathogen like e coli, salmonella or listeria then absolutely.
The main concern in your scenario would be related to allergens. If someone makes something with nuts or peanut butter and doesnt clean it well before making a vanilla for the next person with nut allergies then bad news. This is why I think places like Coldstone are a lawsuit waiting to happen. Personally, I think ColdStone and marble slab have terrible procedures for handling allergens.

My 1/2 gallon of Homemade Vanilla is safe?
