Birmingham proper is pretty ghetto. They just have some very nice suburbs.

Surprisingly, there are some fantastic neighborhoods in the city, too. Forest Park, Altamont, Redmont Park, etc., are very wealthy enclaves within the city. Unfortunately, if you live there you have to send your kids to private school.

The mayor isn’t wrong. He should be applauded for this. I would have loved to see President Obama push this message when he was in office. He could have stated us on the personal accountability.

My wife grew up in Birmingham. They actually lived in Ensley in the 70s/early 80s, but their school started getting rough so my in laws white flighted out of the city.

Obviously, that area is terrible now.

The quote about free stuff was from a white girl who is not a "Birmingham parent."

She reminds me of a girl I booted out of a FB group on race relations. The girl would opine all these asinine cures for the racial conflict in the U.S. Then, I looked at her profile. No one black friend. Lived in a town that was, as a practical matter, all white. Went to a private school with one black student.

She sounds familiar...

You just described living in Memphis. If only there was a common denominator between the two cities we could come up with a solution.

I was watching local news recently and while reporting on a carjacking dude (black reporter) literally said I wish "they" could figure out what to do about the ongoing crime problem.

Who TF is they. Accountability much?

Props to this mayor for at least calling this bad parenting out. You never see any prominent male black figures even mention it.

100%

But as we know personal accountability is kryptonite to progressives

Baton Rouge is no different. There are wealthy, nice areas in the city, but you pretty much have to use private schools.

Thankful to have lived in Alabaster instead of Birmingham.

That area around Calera seems like it's growing quite a bit. I'm usually in Alabama quite often, but not quite as much since my FIL passed.

Until they start sentencing parents, whether custodial or not, for felony convictions of their juvenile kids, their “culture” is not going to change. If they can charge that white school shooter’s parents and send them to jail, they can send a juvenile gangbanger’s parents to jail. Again, it shouldn’t matter if they live with them or not. Maybe that would get divorced or never married parents to stay involved.

Exactly the same for my wife. Just substitute Woodlawn for Ensley.

Wow, a liberal white woman who suggest a policy or plan of action that will perpetuate the dysfunction in the black community while making herself feel virtuous? How unusual!

These liberal white women have no idea that nothing in society works without men. The only thing stopping total chaos are men protecting them.

Maybe she's being sarcastic, because that'd be a good one if she is.

I've never seen anything explain cultcha better than that video a while back where two women rolled up on another woman's trailer after a Facebook fight. Woman came out guns blazing and mowed down both of them. I didn't notice until after the shooting stopped, but there was about a 4 year old child basically standing under the line of fire the whole time. That child is 100% ruined and he hasn't even gotten to kindergarten yet. That's why this goes on and on
