MGM Resorts International is pitching a $1 billion gambling complex for downtown Atlanta that backers say would funnel tens of millions of dollars into the HOPE scholarship.

Atlanta Journal-Constituion
Casino and entertainment giant MGM Resorts International is pitching a $1 billion gambling complex for downtown Atlanta that backers say would funnel tens of millions of dollars into the HOPE scholarship. But first it would have to overcome stiff opposition in the General Assembly and the governor’s office.

MGM’s proposal would create 3,500 jobs and offer Las Vegas-style casino gambling, as opposed to past ideas involving video slot machines, said state Rep. Ron Stephens, who chairs the House’s economic development committee. He called it the “Cadillac” of casino projects.

With a homeless population estimated at almost 6,700, the New Orleans metro area has the second-highest rate of homelessness in the nation. So says a new report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

The report, which focused on the years 2009 to 2011, found the national rate of homelessness was 21 per 10,000 residents in 2011. New Orleans' rate was nearly three times the national average, at 56 per 10,000

I'm not anti gambling, but I'm not sure Atlanta needs or wants this. Interesting though.

Sounds like all the casino money that was going to be "earmarked for education" in Louisiana.

The idea that a casino of that size would benefit a city like Atlanta isn't even insane, it's hilarious. I wonder how many potential scholarships would be hurt at such an establishment

Love the Louisiana hate on Atlanta. I'm sure you guys feel like you're in Tomorrowland whenever you visit. Must suck living in the geological equivalent to our country's butthole.

Gotta admit, I've never ATL compared to Tomorrowland.

I had a good time in that elevator going up to eat at that mediocre restaurant, so there's that.

You know Atlanta hosted Tommorowland right?

Jokes aside, you really want to argue that a casino that size would benefit a city like Atlanta?
