Big Cat Rescue would prefer to keep all the tigers themselves on their reservations, where the tigers are poached frequently. Idiots

f we announced now that we were ending the tradition of bringing Mike to the games, it'd be that much less ammo for the people who oppose getting a mascot, both this time, and in the future (hopefully very far in the future) when we're in this position again.

Agree 100%. Again, most people can't even see the cat in the mobile cage. I'd assume the precedent has been set with the last cat and the next cat won't be forced to appear at games anyway, so it'd be a good gesture on LSUs part.

These people need to stick it. LSU provides a top notch living facility, top medical care, and top nutrition for their tigers. I would put LSU's facility and care up against any sanctuary or zoo. Any tiger, cub or adult, hits the jackpot.

None are forced to the games. Mike VI didn't like them, so he didn't go. I don't remember about Mike V, who was the mascot when I was in school there, but I don't think he was there, either. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

All in all, the PETA types can shove it.

These selfish peta people want to keep all the Tigers for themselves. I say they reintroduce them back to louisianas swamps like we did the deer 50 years ago. Once they're back in their natural habitat they should reproduce just fine

Heck, maybe my grandkids will bag a tiger someday

Done, Butch.
If these idiots would take 5 minutes and do a little research...nevermind, you can't talk sense with them and they wouldn't listen anyway.

The 80's? Damn bro where have you been? They still try to get mike in the trailer a few times a year but they don't coerce him like they used to do.

I don't see why we can't rescue an adult tiger from a shitty zoo in Mexico or something and at least give him / her a better life for 8 years or so.

My biggest 'complaint' about LSU's treatment of Mike is that I wish they could take about a hundred of them at a time.

Some of the places tigers are kept are just flat out disgusting.

Some tigers are rescued from those places and kept by people who are trying hard to do right, but get over their heads and can't handle it.

LSU pretty clearly knows what it takes, and is capable of providing it. It may not help all tiger-kind very much, but I can't see how anybody with a brain can say the individuals LSU takes care of suffer from it.

Big Cat Rescue has an admission charge to see their cats. So who is exploiting the cats for money?

I doubt their cats getter better treatment then Mike.

If we treated Mike like Big Cat Rescue treated their tigers, anti-live mascot people would have a legitimate gripe.

Mike only gets in the trailer if he wants to, I already acknowledged that. But it's not like Mike can tell the driver where he wants to go once he's in there.

I'm not at all saying bring Mike to the games is inhumane. But since LSU does not and never will force, lure, or attempt to train Mike to enter the cage for the games, there's no way to make sure this tradition even happens regularly. It's the only thing outsiders can point to to plausibly argue that Mike's life isn't objectively better than the life of the vast majority of zoo tigers or tigers at rescue facilities. And since so many people get so pissed off when Mike doesn't get in his cage voluntarily, I just that the whole thing is more trouble than it's worth. Is it fun for the kids? Maybe, but most of them can't even see Mike in his cage, it's not fun and can probably be disappointing if Mike doesn't show up, and it'd be more fun for their parents to just take them to see Mike in his habitat before or after the game anyway (or even on a non-game day).

Mike gets more hands-on constant and individual attention than probably any other tiger in America, if not the world.

He has vet students assigned to him for 4 years at a time, and several vets.

Not to mention, there's very few other tigers that would have gotten the level of care Mike got when he was diagnosed with cancer.

This was a specific promise made to Roscoe's handler. One of the conditions for us getting him.

As a big cat lover, I am sorry that your tiger Mike VI has terminal cancer and not long to live. But this is LSU’s opportunity to honor Mike VI by replacing him with a new tiger cub. Your tradition of keeping a live tiger mascot on campus and displaying it proudly around the football field and on the sidelines during LSU football games is amazing and unique and should not end with Mike IV. Having a live tiger mascot on campus is fun and educational for students and visitors. In fact, it encourages students to learn about these wondrous tigers, especially with the fabulous habitat LSU has constructed to care for Mike. Please replace Mike VI as soon as possible. The world is watching and this is LSU’s opportunity to do the right thing.
