I'm in New Orleans on business this week. A good friend of mine's birthday is next week and she collects art. I'd like to buy her some local art that isn't "touristy" crap ie. Fleur de lis's or pictures of Jackson Square etc.
I've been in some galleries on Royal, but the stuff that wasn't touristy was $500+. I'm not looking to spend that much(she's not that good of a friend ) Any galleries, stores featuring local art that isn't in the Quarter that might be more in the $200 & under range?

Jamie Hayes Gallery on Chartres.
He's usually there and will sign/personalize anything you buy.

Dunno if it will be under 200 bucks, but this artist is right on the cusp of being quite famous.

Go see Simon. Local artist (actually transplant from France) that has blown up. You can see his artwork all over the city in various shops and restaurants. Some might consider touristy because of how popular he has become, but he has a lot to choose from and it is all original. You'll probably recognize his work when you see it.

Simon Facebook

1028 Jackson Ave

Unless he has gone up, you should easily find something around your price range. We have 3 pieces that he custom made for use and I don't think I spent more than $175 for any of them.

Frenchmen Art Market is cheaper than the Quarter. I think it's only open on certain nights though. There was also this place on Saint Peter St close to Jackson Square that was pretty cheap.

Swung by Simon's this afternoon. There wasn't much to choose from as much of the art there was already sold. I inquired about a piece and the girl called Simon who was at home. Kinda glad I stopped by to see 3 twenty-somethings actually painting this art and not Simon. His stuff is kinda expensive considering he isn't actually painting any of it.

Will try Dr.Bob tomorrow. Does anyone know if he actually does his own art?

I think he has employees too. His stuff is all over town. Too much for one person.

But I think his work is very popular on the ot.

I guess I figured when I'm spending money on an art piece by a well known local artist that it's actually created by that artist and not some $10 hr college kid.

I get that their busy, so maybe churn out less pieces and charge more?

Craig Tracy does body painting prints. He is on the far end of Royal.

So you're trying to get out of the friend zone and into her panties once an for all.

Once in the friend zone...always in the friend zone.

I admire your effort, though. Godspeed, noble steed!

No shite. Her boyfriend will most likely forget her birthday but somehow get anal and a bj that night while you'll get a, "Thank you, you're so sweet, and this means so much" hug.
