“I had a Zoom call with (the investigator) where they asked me about raising my voice and yelling at an employee . . . and about yelling (at customers) about shutting the front door,” he said.
Hontzas said he explained that his customers know that it is a rule to shut the front door and that “we playfully talk about it.”
He said he was also asked about yelling at an employee for not keeping the ice machine filled.

Another one of the complaints against him, Hontzas said, stemmed from a quote from Oxford, Miss., chef John Currence, a friend and mentor to him, that appeared in a 2022 AL.com profile of Hontzas.
In it, Currence joked about how ironic it was that Hontzas’ restaurant had been a 2022 James Beard Award semifinalist for outstanding hospitality.
“We all let out a collective guffaw,” Currence said in that AL.com story. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in there, and he’s screaming at people that don’t close the door, screaming at people about sitting at tables before they’ve ordered.”

This one is for you, my friend and everyone else who has been passed over as a result of bullshite woke reasoning and fake virtue-signaling by the spineless, rudderless, consciousnessless @beardfoundation who, in spite of over-performing industry averages in award recognition of female and minority talent in our industry continue to find ways to discredit and ignore folks in our profession who do amazing work, simply due to their fear of honoring someone of a single “wrong” demographic. I am sickened today in a way I can’t even begin to explain, but it is way past time to stop this cycle of insane blame and shame through arbitrary accusations and NOTHING approaching due-process and stripping people of credit they deserve based on nothing other than the opinion of one. I love you, brother…

Gordon has gotten famous because of his yelling.

This country has gone soft…

The person(s) that made that decision has/have never burned on the line. I once had a chef threaten me with a knife because I had his mise in the wrong spot. Didn't think anything of it.
Yelling at patrons is different but if it is part of your schtick then it shouldn't be.

Chris Hastings won a James Beard and is a gigantic, loud, abrasive dick...in Birmingham.

I was once fired for allegedly sexually harrassing a hostess.

So you’re telling me the guy at Steins Deli has no chance?

Justifiable imo

Chefs are notorious assholes. It’s part of their charm. Apply this standard to actors!

Yet when chefs get treated like assholes outside the restaurant they get the vaginas in a twist. Dishing out but can’t take it

Lemme guess she had a BF/husband that found out she was bangin' the whole back of house and you took the fall.
One place I worked in had a large linen closet and those bags of dirty tablecloths, napkins, and aprons made a decent makeshift bed. If there was a napkin tied on the doorknob after closing you didn't go in. The front of house did a lot more "harassing" of the back of house than vice versa by a long shot.

Hontzas is not a dick. He’s just an interesting kinda loud guy who has one of the best restaurants in the south. This is some bullshite hit piece sparked no doubt by one of the other finalists.

Sounds to me like most everybody shares the opposite opinion of you. I don't know the guy but you don't have to be a giant dickhead to be successful. People will work harder for you and go that little bit extra if they like and respect you. JMHO.

Why even worry about an award for cooking when you get in trouble for being a cook? I’ve never had grilled pussy, but I guess it’s on the way.

Just to be clear. Y'all claiming cancel culture on a reality tv show or something ?

I imagine some chefs run kinder gentler kitchens today but the traditional French Brigade types tend to run them like their military namesake. Break you down to build you up and make multiple people run as one. It can be a madhouse but also a thing of beauty on a Fri or Sat night when the tickets are piling in and dishes are hitting the pass like clockwork. If someone is cut out for a brigade they will both hate and love their chef but either way they respect them. Sometimes you don't recognize the respect until you leave that kitchen, much like the military.

The James Beard Foundation is not a reality show. While not quite a Michelin star it is a very prestigious award and given for much more wide-ranging accomplishments than Michelin. Being disqualified from a Beard is a big deal for a chef.
