The energy savings on a higher seer rating has a poor ROI. The thing you get with higher seer units and options are comfort such as two stage compressors and variable speed evaporator fans. Get a 14 or 16 Seer unit and call it a day.

The guy who installed mine said the energy saving from a 13 to 14 seer would be $20 a year.

Bryant is made by carrier. I just had a 4 ton installed it was 3675.00 for everything . 10 year warranty

He lied.
Higher SEER units are well worth the money.
I think 13 is the minimum now, anyway.

If you couple a high SEER unit with foam and hard pipe, you can get some pretty amazing Electric bills, thus the ROI is significant.
On a regular house, the minimum I'd consider is a 14-16.

The minimum very soon will be 14 seer. When I was considering the SEER rating on my new home that will be built, had a couple of energy raters use their software and foam attic and putting the unit in a semi-conditioned space was much higher ROI than the actual SEER. For me to jump from a 14 SEER up to 20 was a ROI of 16 years. Not saying it isn't worth it but the foam and air sealing is way higher on the priority list for me.

Installed a new carrier last year. I'll let you know in 15 years or so.

He didn't. I did the math and I would never see the ROI, take decades to make up the difference in price. Better money spent on insulation and fixing draft leaks. In fact you could buy the lower SEER unit and the savings would pay for doing blown-in insulation and a decent FLIR camera to find air leaks and you'd still be saving money in the long term.

Yes, I agree with you both (Clames).
A crappy house (poor insulated, leaks, etc) is not going to benefit much from a high SEER.
I also agree that foam is a much quicker ROI than high SEER units.
Run the numbers with foam and a 18-19 SEER unit. You should see some good ROI, but admittedly, those units are expensive.
