Ok but thats nothing compared to the recent battle against fascism fought at UC-Berkeley. Those are the real soldiers.

Read "The Last Battle" by Cornelius Ryan. The answer to that is yes. Many Germans were trying to get the hell out of Berlin and headed west to surrender to the British, French and U.S. They knew what was coming from the East.

You're right. One of the main reasons the Germans fought with such desperation against the Soviets is they knew that every day they held them back was more of Germany that would fall to the Western Allies. And it's not just the land they were worried ab out saving, they were also fighting the Soviets to allow as many German citizens as possible to escape westward.
