Probably more of a "hey, the Soviets are raping every female they find and are going to throw us fighting men in labor camps for years or worse so I'm cool with fighting down to the last city block."

I wonder if the Germans would have surrendered sooner if it were the Americans and British fighting in Berlin.

And they never knew a Germany before Hitler, so they were probably 100% bought into it no matter what.

Fortunately for the world, Hitler was not a very smart military strategist.

Smart enough to lead his country to the conquest of Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Holland, and France within the first year of the war. There were then many more victories against the British and others in Yugoslavia, Greece, and Africa, followed by one of the most unprecedented military advances in history with the initial successes of Operation Barbarossa against the Soviets. Only then, and with the entry of the United States, did the war begin to turn against Germany.

Hitler was not a military strategist at all (though he was an amateur reader of Clausewitz). Even though he would later handicap his generals with excessive intervention and political interference in the conduct of the war, Germany's successes in WWII in spite of the odds against her were little short of remarkable. Hitler is directly involved in both those successes and failures.

Whatever you do, don't follow any of the wwii pictures in color Facebook pages. Every damn time a pic pops up on my time line, 45 min fly by and I'm still flipping through pictures.

Love this kind of stuff. So interesting

As usual from Chewy, 100% dead on target, thought provoking, and insightful.
