Depending on where you stay on the lake it's not too far, but could be an inconvenience when trying to get a ride home. Don't do Franklins for a bachelor party, go to Salt Lick instead (BYOB and cash only). Rainey is cool for a laid back night. I like to say it's similar to what Frenchman is to Bourbon.

It depends on what you are willing to spend man. In terms of swank penthousey type joints there's the W and the JW Marriott. The W is like any other city's W, basically a perpetual party, but pricey. Haven't stayed in the JW yet, it's the newest. The downtown Hilton across from the Convention Center (not to be confused with the Hilton Garden Inn, that's a different place, but it's also downtown) is really nice reasonably new and a great location for partying. I always tell people to stay there unless they just have money to burn. There's a Four Seasons downtown right on Town Lake but I don't think it attracts the same crowd.

I would go Airbnb for a bachelor party. Just rent a house and be done with it.

That's good advice. Austin is Airbnb crazy.

I planned a BP over here right before I moved and that's the first time I used Airbnb. Now that's pretty much all I use. Unless I'm trying to impress someone, because you do have to realize that the place could suck. I've never had a problem, but I could definitely see it happening.

I'm checking airbnb and vrbo, but it's not showing a ton of options for our dates (april 14-17), but I'm trying to get as close to 6th and downtown as possible

Muellers BBQ in east Austin is a great substitute for Franklins.

Never a line no frills. Great food.

Gas Lamp District is The French Quarter after a bath.

It's awesome.

Hipsters or Hippies? Pick your poison.

Asheville is what Austin was in the '70s. Love that town.

If you do San Diego be sure you get the bus schedule for Tijuana and hide a lot of cash on your persons, so you can bribe the policia.

Honestly, as a native and UT graduate, it really started to change in the late 90's when everyone from out of state started moving here. Texans (the ones in this area at least) are generally very laid back and chilled out. It's damn hot here and things move slow.

We got the stereotype of wearing beat up Wrangler or Levis, cowboy boots, and a halfway unbuttoned Hawaiin shirt...out somewhere relaxing on a patio with a little bit of weed in a dugout, a margarita, whiskey, or cold Cerveza with our feet up. We were never trying to "keep Austin weird". We just did things differently than the rest of Texas (mainly Houston and Dallas).

The economy started booming and things started to "posh" up. The beat up pickups and Jeep Wagoneers were slowly replaced with BMW, Range Rovers, Mercedes. Our shithole college homes in East Austin were worth $80,000. Now, they are pushing $800,000. People now are more likely to go out and be seen than just relax and see where the night takes you. It's a different place. A great place still, but different. I'm glad to now hang my hat right outside of it.

Now, Austin is much like a dessert. I can't have it and don't want it all the time. I only want a little of it every now and then.
