It's not always accurate. A friend of the family had the testing done and the child was born with Down Syndrome. Sometimes you just don't know.

True. My baby will be here in 8 weeks. We did all of the testing, but I am still a little nervous.

Reminds me too much of the horrible "T4 program" the Nazis used to kill disabled German children that was one of the first stepping stones to the eventual Holocaust.

Yup. It seriously shocks me how hypocritical our society can be. They need the situation to be exactly the same to compare it.

I think it is outlandish to compare that to the prequels to the holocaust.

Yeah because the vagina is a magical doorway. On one side you're a lump of tissue, seconds later on the other side you're a person.

Some are. I've been around a few people with DS and they are assholes.

My neighbor is a single father raising two little girls, both under 10, one with downs. Mom couldn't deal with downs and left them. I honestly don't know how he does it with a full time job, but he has managed so far to raise two well adjusted girls.

Why not? Someone is making a decision on what a life is worth. This baby is sick, you don't have to keep it. It's not like a "regular" baby.

We declined the testing. We decided it wouldn't have changed anything, and with my wife's pregnancy history, we didn't want to increase stress levels that would come with a positive test. We didn't even think about it once we told the doctor we wouldn't do the test.

I am not against the test in general. I think it would be beneficial in preparing for a DS child. We just decided that the threat of another miscarriage outweighed the benefits of advanced notice.

I don't think it is at all. With the increasing accuracy and availability of genetic testing coupled with health care for the collective, selective genetics is actually a very real and valid topic.

Im torn. I mean I have a handicapped family member. What if they could have altered his genetics only to allow him to not have his handicap. What if they got so advanced they could have altered only your son's physical disabilities, and nothing else?

My wife tested positive for the CF gene, so we had to get myself tested ($100). Pretty nerve wracking, but I was negative, hence the baby was in no danger of having it. We have some friends who are in the same boat, but they decided against testing the husband because it wasn't going to change what they felt. I admired that, but at the same time, I would personally like to be prepared for how to care for a sick child like that.

I could play what if all day. I choose not to in regards to my son. But, I can tell you there is no way to separate him from his disability. He is who he is because of the life he has lived.

Please explain how people aborting babies nowadays due to physical disabilities is any different than the Nazi's killing children in the 30's for the same exact reason?

I understand this side too. That is why I say I am torn. The thought To watch him run and throw a ball almost makes me cry(talking about my family member)

My younger brother was born without most of his brain. He was only supposed to live a few months. He lived 18 years. Never saw, spoke, heard anything. But would laugh and cry and all. Couldn't walk, had to be in a chair most of the time or bed.

But my parents took him on every trip, and every vacation.

That's awesome.

You only have to be torn if they ever come out with gene therapy that can reverse the disability. Until that day arrives, enjoy what he can do.

well the pure fact that people killing their own children and a government killing the children is the difference in itself.
