I know there have been many threads started about what to do in Austin, but most of the suggestions seem to revolve around the lake/being on the water.

What are some cold weather alternatives to spend a couple of days?

ETA: I'm going to be with my wife. We are in our mid-twenties.

1. Get hipsters drunk.
2. Shave em and bathe em.

Do the 290 wine trail-finish it up with dinner at Otto's in Fredericksburg.

Visit any one of the breweries(Jester Kind, Austin Beer Works, Oasis).

BBQ road trip.

When will you be in Austin?

The Trail of Lights runs through Dec 22. Definitely go to that if you can. LINK

Go to Mozarts Coffee for some coffee and their holiday light show that runs at the top of every hour at night. They are closed on X-mas Eve and X-mas Day.

Get some good barbecue at John Mueller Meat Co, La BBQ, or Mickelthwait. If you want the best and don't mind getting their at 8:00AM and waiting 4 hours to eat, go to Franklin.

Hike some trails on the Greenbelt. There should be water in the creeks, which create a lot of small rapids / waterfalls. The Loop 360 access is a good starting place. Go east if you start there. LINK

Hit up Rainey St, East 6th (east of I35), and Easy Tiger for cool places to go out.

Yeah, I just looked into the trail of lights, but I'm missing it by one day.

I'll be arriving the night of the 23rd and staying through the 27th.

I was definitely planning on hitting up Rainey St as that seems like my type of hangout.

Appreciate the feedback

Not looking for that kind of entertainment this time around

I'm a fan of live music, anybody got info on the best spots?

I know Stubb's BBQ is a big one.

There's not much to Austin that's particularly "Christmas-y".

The Zilker Park Trail of Lights is pretty much it.

People like Austin in part because it doesn't snow and everything is new, so it doesn't have that "snowy old building" feel that makes you think of Christmas.

As for things to do there in winter, in general (and these are all close to downtown):

Hit up the overlook at Mt. Bonnell for a sweeping view of Lake Austin and the houses in the hills out west.

Go eat/drink lunch at the Chili Parlor for some of the last of the real original Austin-vibe that's now mostly been paved over or condominium-ified

Hike the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The creek should actually be flowing.

Walk the Roy Butler trail around Town Lake (aka the Colorado River, at the foot of downtown, which separates N from S Austin - a dividing line of local culture). Particularly, be sure to pass Lou Neff Point - spectacular view of the city skyline.

Catch a show at Stubb's if you like anyone playing while you are there. My favorite outdoor venue.

If you want to party, go to Rainey Street.

If you want a hamburger, go to Hut's.

If you want to drink on the lake, go to Abel's on the Lake on Lake Austin. Don't drive out to the Oasis on Travis. People will tell you that, but it's way further than you want to drive and it's over-rated.

Cheap Mexican - Maudie's on Lamar

Laid back bar where they'll serve you as much as you want and you don't have to put up with a club or meat-market vibe - The Tavern on Lamar.

Don't:

Go to 6th Street. It's full of hoodlums these days. Not what it once was. Living off of former glory now. Sad.

Waste your time at Franklin's. It's good, but it's dumb to spend 4 hours in line for smoked meat. I can't stand that Franklin's hipster pretentiousness. If you have transportation and want good BBQ, drive 30 mins out to FM 1826 & 967 near Driftwood and eat at Salt Lick instead.

My man

I've spent a little bit of time in Austin twice before and agree about 6th street. It had a bourbon st vibe to it that really wasn't for me. I found lots of great places to eat, but I kind of felt like I was running around with my head cut off. Looking to have more of a plan this go around. My wife warned me that Oasis is a tourist trap.

Thanks for the ideas.

If you want nice restaurants, as in spendy places for adults that the wife will like, let me know.

I left those off because people will be all like "Don't say to eat at a place that's expensive, just list the fun/cheap stuff".

Some people will argue my 6th Street point, but they're either just 21 or haven't been recently. I met my wife in a bar on 6th. So I speak with authority when I say it sucks now, and the scene for attractive, non-criminal people and college students moved away. It's a bunch of Dindus and Fort Hood rifraff now.

The brewery, winery and distillery tours can be fun also. Lots of those out towards the hill country if that is your thing.

I met my wife in the French Quarter, so I understand

I'm not sure we'll need a fancy place to eat this time around. We are seeing her parents in Georgetown (25 or so miles north) on Christmas Eve/Christmas. I'll be making Christmas Eve dinner and eating with the family Christmas night.

I definitely want to do this. My wife isn't a big beer drinker at all, but we've been to two breweries here in Dallas and she's enjoyed both.

A winery or distillery might be even better.

Also, just general sightseeing, walking by the Texas Capitol Building is cool. It's bigger than the US Capitol. The interesting thing about it that most people don't know is that behind it, there is an inverted sunken rotunda matching the dimensions of the visible above-ground rotunda that serves as a window-well for the underground offices behind the capitol building. They needed more space and instead of erecting a structure that would block the capitol, they built the offices underground.

About 8 blocks north of there is UT's DKR stadium, if you have an interest in checking off stadia from your bucket list.

If you do go out to the lake, eat at Lucy's Fried Chicken.

Take SUB's advice for BBQ in town. Micklethwait's is my personal favorite these days.

Which is better, Lucy's or the Electric Cock?
