From the Reddit thread about it

Ex-contest surfer here. This can happen at any time. Lucky for Mick, the sharks (there are conflicting reports that there may have been two that attacked him) didn't get a hold of his leg or torso. In fact, from the footage it looked like they were testing him, bumping him, or playing with him. If they wanted to eat Mick, he'd be dead.
Let's also remember that this happened in S Africa. The place has great whites all over the place, and they chum the waters for expeditions for tourism. Even without that, it's not a safe place to surf because of the location and habitat. I've surfed all around the world, and that is one of the few places I will not go to.
Looks more likely that he is just lucky they didn't want to eat him and he didn't actually fight them off.

Can you be an contest surfer and NOT go to South Africa?

I have surfed my entire life and can't even imagine what I would do if a shark bullied me around like that. It's the risk you take though. A buddy of mine had something similar happen to him about 10 years ago. Scariest thing I have ever witnessed.

He may or my not be but that's not the point

who just got lucky.
No doubt he did. Do you think a punch to a shark is really going to discourage it from eating you if it wants to? No one is getting in a fist fight with a shark and winning if the shark really wants you for food. It's cool he survived but saying he punched it in the snout and it ran off is hyperbole at best. Like the Reddit post said it is more likely they were testing him, bumping him, and playing with him. He should probably go buy a lottery ticket now.

Chill out mane, no need to get into a pissing match over this story. I actually went back and changed the OP because of the journalism experts on this board.

Don't surf in notoriously shark infested waters.

Even swimming in South Africa seems like youre handing over your fate & destiny.

The article also says this one of the most shark infested waters in the world. Surfs up bros
Why is he a pussy? He's the best competitive surfer on the planet not named Kelly slater.

Closest I've ever gotten while out was an 8 foot bull swimming outside of the lineup in new Smyrna beach. Also guy I went to PT school with had his thumb taken half off by a 4 foot bull who followed his hand out of water as he was paddling out. Lot of spinners breach around here too. Nice thing about s fla is water clarity tends to prevent a lot of accidental test bites.
