AT&T uverse 3mbps....fast enough?

I received an email saying that uverse is now available in my area.
They're offering 3mbps at $29.95/mth. Is that even worth having?
My daughters only use the computer for social media and my son watches YouTube videos.
Is 3mbps enough to do this?

Cable is better for internet if you can get it for the same price or less. Otherwise, that is fine for backup/secondary internet.

3mbps is on the low side of what's available anywhere. When streaming videos from the Internet, it's recommended to have about 5mbps for an hd stream from something like Netflix. With multiple devices potentially streaming videos (from facebook and youtube), you could very well saturate your bandwidth. I would consider upgrading, but no one would fault you for going with 3 to test it out first. At that price though, your local cable provider will almost definitely have a faster connection available.

3mbps is pretty slow. On top of that, if they're saying 3Mbps it might be more realistic to expect 1.5Mbps or less depending on your connection type is. It may be enough for what you're looking for, but it is very slow by today's standards.

Not even fricking close to enough unless they are hardwired into the internet. Even then, if more than one person is online, probably not enough.

You will get 10 different answers from 10 different people. But generally speaking, you need approx 1.5 mbps to stream video (about 5.0 mbps to stream HD).
I have Eatel (limited areas available of course) and I routinely get 25-30 mbps download for $43/month. Looks like I signed up during a special time because now it is $63/month.
If it is just for social media and youtube videos then it should be fine. However, once he is old enough for internet porn you need to bump up that speed. Aint nobody got time for buffering.

I had 3 with ATT. It was terrible. Couldn't stream Netflix or ESPN reliably and the speed was terrible. Upgraded to 12 and its light years better for only about 20 more bucks a month. Well worth it

call bullshite all you like.. its a fact "and ps4 is hardwired" I live in the middle of nowhere and that is all they offer. I stream netflix via ps4 and play my ps4 online with no issues. Netflix isnt streamed in high def obviously but its good enough for me.

I've had Hughesnet for 5 years because other than Charter, that's all that was available where I live.

We have Uverse (16mbps tier) and Comcast (3mbps tier), and both the Roku and Apple TV are picture clear on the lower bandwidth, but shitty on UVerse. 3 meg is plenty without any interference, typically.

Frankly, I'd go with Charter. You get a better product for less money. They may piss you off, but AT&T's customer service has, in my experience, gone from surprisingly good, to disappointingly bad--to the point that they outright lied to me over the phone and now charge me $25 more a month than they previously did for a product that I could get from Comcast for literally $40 cheaper per month.
The only reason I would have recommended AT&T over any other cable company is that their customer service was actually servicing customers. It no longer appears to be doing so. I will be switching to Comcast after my contract with AT&T runs up. If I am going to pay more money for a worse product, I at least want to be treated better. But I won't be as UVerse has grown in Houston to a point that they can strong arm their customers just like the other big players. May as well get strong armed by a company that will at least provide me with a product that works better.

Your situation is basically the exact same for me, except I have Exede. Satellite internet is the absolute worst. I have a 10 GB cap ($60/mth) and if I stream Netflix, it will be used up in a couple weeks...maybe less depending on how many times I stream.
Uverse just came available to us too. I'm really wanting to switch so I'm glad you asked. Does Uverse have a cap?

If that is all you are doing you should be fine. But for about 20.00 more you can get 50mbs from Cox. I had problems with Uverse that they eventually solved but it took them a year and a lot of service calls.
